E92 328xi Does anyone know what this sound is?

Hey all I just changed a starter on this 328 as some side work and when I fired it up its making a loud almost grinding at idle. Sounds to me like a pulley bearing also the harmonic balancer did not appear to be seated correctly it was walking around every rotation.

Any ideas are appreciated Thanks in advance!

Well you just did some work on the starter so there's a good chance it could be related to that, maybe it's stuck engaged or something. Easier way to tell is to remove the belt and run it and see if it still makes it so you can rule out any belt driven components. What do you mean the harmonic balancer looks unseated when turning? If it's dirty I'd wipe it and look again maybe it's just clean on one spot, it'd probably vibrate a good bit if it was like that.

Harmonic balancer doesn't rotate straight looks like its walking around or wobbling as its turning. Noise doesn't sound like the starters stuck on. Noise is coming from the front of the engine. Definitely sounds like a bearing. Im doing some more work to the car next weekend. I will have to investigate further.

I'd take off that belt and see. If the balancer is loose that's a big deal and wouldn't drive it around like that.
