Gearbox info - help needed
Hi All. Apologies for a cross-post, but this question applies to both 1 and 3 series.
Can anyone tell me, definitively, if a manual box from an F series M135i / 335i will fit an E series 135i / 335i (both being N55 powered)? The N55 manual box in the E-series 135i/335i has the code: GS6-45BZ-THD4 (part number 23007599342) The manual box in the M135i / F-series 335i is: GS6-45BZ-THY8 (part number 23007617492). Are they compatible, i.e. direct fit, plug and play? Realoem lists the THY8 as superseding the THD4. However, when looking at the THD4 page, the "superseded by THY8" has "nonexchangeable retrospectively" written next to it. Is this due to physical differences? Does anyone know what these 4-digit suffix codes translate to? They're both "TH" but curious as to what the rest of the code is. Thanks for any help.

There was someone on the F30 forums that put a N54 transmission into his 335i perhaps you can dig that thread up for more details. He had to make a custom shift linkage and put in the driveshafts from the n54 car. Overall I don't think it's worth it as it would probably be more expensive than putting the correct transmission in.

I am also looking at the exact same problem. Except mine is for a 2011 F10 535. All 3 of those variants list "5' F10 (01/2009 — 06/2013)" under their "found on the following vehicles".
23007599342 Exch. 6 speed gearbox GS6-45BZ - THD4 Superseded by: 23007617492 (THY8) (09/01/2011 — ), nonexchangeable retrospectively 23008609414 (THNJ) (11/24/2015 — ), nonexchangeable retrospectively |

I think non-exchangeable retrospectively might actually mean that e series gearbox can’t be used in the f chassis car. Quick eBay listing photo comparison shows that they look identical except that the f series gearbox has a gear position sensor on top. E series box doesn’t have it. I guess you can just install the f series gearbox and leave that sensor unplugged.
