Update from the dealer regarding my wastegates....
OK my SA just called me. They identified my wastegate rattle and exhaust "burble" noise on deceleration. Typically he said they would replace the wastegates... the whole thing. He said that BMWNA is not allowing them to do any warranty work on any car with slight wastegate rattle noise unless it was harmful to the engine right now.. Mine was never that bad. The reason was that BMWNA is coming out with a new software that will fix the wastegate rattle noise and rid the exhaust burble noise and get this!!! he also said that it would eliminate turbo lag that the wastagates would produce on cars. He said the the new "bme campaign" will start soemtime early next year. I then told him i knew what was going about 29.2, and he said exactly, they are coming out with v32. he did update my car to v31 and said as soon as v32 is available to drop on by and he will get it on my car.
bullshit or not? |

I think that's pretty much what has been reported to a few members on here. I could be wrong though... I haven't had any wastegate problems so I'm just a casual observer.

I thought the "burble" noise during deceleration was normal.. at least thats what Charlie told me when he was driving my car after installing my coilovers. I actually like the sound myself.. So is it not normal to have the burble sound? I couldn't hear it with the stock exhaust but it got louder with my AE exhaust.

The new programming (v32) can be requested to fix the turbo lag on certain production dates, but it brings back the noise. It does not fix both problems. You can either have quiet wastegates and turbo lag, or no turbo lag and noisy wastegates.

However, with a car built before 09/07 that already had or at least can develop rattles because of deficient wastegates, you will have the choice of either: a. A rattle-fix version of the software with slight turbo lag (which is much less apparent as with v29.2 or v30.x) or b. A lag-fix version of the software with the possibility of rattle (quote from the official statement: "Clients who get this update should understand that there is a possibility of slightly increased engine noise levels under certain circumstances."). What they don't do (as your SA has now confirmed) is do to "The Right Thing (tm)", apply the lag-fix and replace the faulty wastegate actuators at their expense. OP, if you search around, you will find that the V32 should fix the problem and it will be available in January 09. Another thing, I keep readong over and over. People do not get new wastegates...they get new actuators. Wastegates are apart of the turbo. Getting a new wastegate will mean getting a new turbo.

as long as my car is fine (and even if the wastegates are making noises which arent now) i wont never let BMW update my car which by the way is a 07/07. i dont feel much any lag after the JB3 installation. Maybe thats just because the car got smoother.

If you aren't losing boost you may be fine. I was losing boost, hence new turbos were installed. Nice to see an update coming down the pipeline.

FYI I have brand new TURBOS AND WASTEGATES and I still have the "slight" rattle upon deceleration, along with 29.2 and MSD80.
So that might explain why they're not replacing them for you. Under certain circumstances, this horrible, horrible scourge 29.2 actually causes the engine noise it is designed to reduce. I am very tuned into the wastegate rattle now, and as soon as I get v32, I'll let the big thread know how it performs. |

I just noticed exhaust burble last night with my recently installed AE. I figured it was due to the change in exhaust. So it is possibly a symptom of wastegate issues? Rats..... Oh, and I get pretty bad drone with the AE if the engine is under any sort of moderate load under 2500 RPM. Not a May 07 build though (March 07.) I also don't park in a garage, which I think helps identifying the wastegate rattle easier. Might have to hit a local parking garage later and hear what I can hear....
