performance brakes

Are they a worthwhile addition to my 320d m-sport, im thinking about them more for the way they look though, will look realy nice behind the csl's.

Also not sure about the size of the standard 320 discs,to give me an idea of how much bigger the performance ones are.

Are you on about the BMW performance BBK? The one with the gold calipers?

If so they are definately worthwhile, I've got them fitted to my 330 e92!

The standard discs fitted to the front of your car are 312x24 the discs in the BBK are 338x26

Yep,the gold ones.

Also, are they one size,so 338mm for mine aswell as the 330 for example,as im thinking smaller ones might be offered for mine and i would rather the bigger ones, if you get my point.

So just to add, no they don;t rust, look the nuts and work great! The only downside is the standard pads kick out a bit more dust.

If BMW saying they aren't available for the 335, does that mean they don't offer much better braking capabilities than stock? Or are they just being difficult for some reason?

My 2007 e90 320d with 163HP has 300x24mm front discs, but I believe the 2008 e90 320d with 177HP got the slightly larger 312x24mm discs.
So the size of your brakes depends how old your e90 is.

Ah ok, I was quoting the size of the 2008 cars! 2007 cars or older e90's had 300x24

Agreed, the standard 335 brakes are 10mm larger in diameter (348mm compared the BMW Performance 338mm discs), but the pad face is the same size... larger discs do not necessarily mean larger pads... the pads on the E46 M3 (325mm discs) are exactly the same and the M3 CSL with 20mm larger discs (345mm).

The E90 330d/i have 330mm discs and always have since the E90 came out in 2005, so BMW's statement does not really make sense as the Performance ones are 8mm larger and as the BMW Performance brakes are a 6 pot calliper, the pad surface area is around 30% greater than the standard brakes single calliper pad on E90's upto and including the 330's...

The reason to buy them is cause they look the tits and work far better at dissipating heat with the cross drilled design and combat fade better by constantly de-glazing the pads with their slotted grooves also (this is why there is slightly more brake dust, but nothing over the top).

So go for the BMW Performance brakes if either:

a) You want better more efficient braking.
b) You want cool as hell looks.
c) You do the odd trackday - As they wipe the floor at higher temperatures with standard brakes on any BMW past or present.

In either case, BMW have hit the nail on the head with this kit!

We already have a running prototype E46 330d with these brakes fitted and we currently have a E46 M3 in our workshop and we are designing a retrofit kit for this too... the response we have been having is massive and we should have our E46 kits ready and available for sale in time for Christmas!!!

At £650 for front 6 pot callipers and discs, £80 per replacement disc, a whole range of Pagid upgraded pads available and Goodridge hoses, they seem like a no brainer really.

How can AP Racing, Brembo and Performance Friction compete at over three times the price?

ant.

I absolutely agree with you Ant on all three points you make above - the BMW kit IS a great kit for the money and does offer big brake performance gains over the stock BMW kit, especially on models 330 and below. For the 335, the greatest improvement is in repeatability and resistance of heat-induced fade especially when braking from high speeds. To maximise this performance gain, you do need to consider using Pagid pads and Goodridge hoses as you have said - all this combined will be a great setup for fast road use for 99.9% of all drivers.

You pose the question how AP Racing, Brembo and PFC can justify a cost three, or even more, times the cost of the BMW BBK. However, you must admit that the products from AP and Brembo (the higher end items) are designed for much more demanding and rigorous use - they are not systems really for the road, but rather for the track. In this respect, their durability and serviceability will be greater than the BMW BBK. Just consider the fact that APs have separate bell housings for instance, the discs are far bigger at 355x32mm, and the heat-resistance that much higher.

This is not in disrespect to the BMW system - they are not priced in the same performance category at all. BMW BBK is not competing with the big AP or Brembo setups - BMW want a slice of the upgrade market, but at the retail/commercial consumer end of the market rather than the professional.

Having had one of the first ever sets on a 335, I can wholeheartedly recommend the BMW BBK as a performance upgrade for the road and occasional track use. It is fantastic value, especially at the prices that speedreligion.net have obtained for the E90post forum members

Oh, and they do look brilliant
