Cleaning a BMS air intake?

Hey guys, my one year maintence is coming up soon and I'm going to have to take out my BMS intake so there isn't any problems at the stealership. I've never cleaned an intake before, can someone give me a quick rundown of what I need to get it done and what cleaning agents I need?

K&N sells a filter cleaner kit. You should be able to find it @ any major parts store.

For the record, my dealer didn't care about the after-market intake (ECIS) I had on my E46. I will not be changing the intake on my E92. I am all set with the whistling noise that occurred with the one on my E46...At this stage of my life I am all about whisper quiet.

K&N recharge kit, it's only about 10 bucks i think? i clean my filter once i see too much dirt on it.

No need to clean it as soon as it gets a little dirty.According to K&N,the dirtier it gets the better it works.Dont flame me thats according to K&N.Look it up if you think i,m cracking up.

I bought a recharge kit yesterday, they're $12 at Pep Boys. And yes, dirty elements will filter better - but flow less.

At any rate, you aren't supposed to regularly clean those. K&N recommends every 50,000 miles. I would only do it if it's really dirty looking. You don't want to needlessly clean it, because when you go to re-oil it, you might use too much oil (which nearly everyone does) and then you'll have a nice film of red oil in your charge pipes after the first run.

Plus, after you clean it, you have to let it sit for 1 - 2 days to dry before oiling. Most people are unprepared for that kind of downtime on their DD.

just put your stock one back in for two days... LOL

1 to 2 days? my filter took like 2 hours to dry out here in the central valley, our summer days are crazy hot haha. and as long as your not holding the can too close to the filter while reoiling you should be fine. i got a nice red color but no where near how it looked when i first bought it.

I wouldnt clean it until it is extremely filthy.Check with K&N and they will verify what i,m saying.
