Transmission Oil Cooler Conversion
I ran over a curb in my e92 335xi and bent my transmission oil cooler into the pulley, which ripped a hole through the trans oil cooler piping. The clearance is terrible, so I'm planning on just converting the heat exchange to air-cooled. There are kits for the conversion priced at around $500, but I can make my own for around $200. I have found the air cooler I want, but I just need a fitting that connects the trans oil cooler lines to the air cooler piping (10AN) and a plug that can plug the coolant lines.
I'm open to new ideas on how I should fix up my car or do the conversion but other than that I need the sizes and names of the fittings to do the conversion. The kit that I'm trying to copy is: BMS E Chassis N54/N55 BMW Transmission Oil Cooler https://burgertuning.com/products/n5...43027460784302 The parts I'm currently looking to buy: CNRAQR 10 Row AN10-10AN Oil Cooler Kit Universal Engine Transmission Aluminium Alloy Black https://www.amazon.ca/CNRAQR-AN10-10...5&sr=8-12&th=1 The tranny oil cooler attachment that goes into the pipe from the tranny heat exchanger looks like this but I don't know what size i need to get: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/rus-640930 Heat exchange for reference: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ZgAAA...8z/s-l1600.png EDIT: 2008 e92 BMW 335xi 6AT |

Why not just buy the one you know works?
I'm having trouble seeing the Amazon link due to country |

I have seen it documented that the auto trans may over heat in the higher HP range. I would not bother to upgrade on a stock engine.
I asked a similar question years ago. Haven’t followed through with it, yet. I don’t think the trans fluid/oil is under much pressure. A rubber hose and 2 worm gear clamps is what members here suggested to use for the aftermarket cooler. (When deleted the stock heat exchanger and adding an oil cooler) One thing to keep in mind is the thermostat that is sold with the actual kit. I believe there is a chance of over cooling and never allowing the trans to reach operating temperature. During heavy throttle driving, this may not be an issue, but for commutes, it may be. |
