Navigation trick...
Someone I know did this in his Infiniti... He took out the navi disk, found some of the pic files, and altered or photoshopped them to make them more customized or whatever pics he wants to come up for certain functions. Then he burned it onto a blank disk and put it back in the car and voila! Instant customization of navi!
Anyone try this on their e90 yet? |

I saw the folks over at acurazine play around with this...I think a quick mosey over would reveal tips and how-tos on starting a similar project

i do remember this on the acura board. and it seemed to be pretty easy. im just not sure if its do able on our navi. all they were doing was something along the lines of putting the navi disc in their computer find the "mainscreen.jpg" file or WHATEVER it was called, then replacign that with whatever picture they wanted and calling it the same name.
I think.

you can possibly change all the pictures on the back screen. the main screen. check out that link to see what people have done in the acuras. if you look, its kinda like all the vital information that you can scroll across, and then a picture in the background. you might be able to obviously leave all the info, but just change that background picture

Apparently, it does seem to work....
You could load map pictures from Google Earth for example....

If someone could make the DVD available for me I can try to work on this. I have a lot of experience in this area - reverse engineering software. Also if someone can post info on the idrive computer specs. I might be able to look into writing custom apps for it.

The main thing I do not understand is the 'dbal' folder. It contains VxWorks binaries (VxWorks is a realtime unix-like OS), and I thought the system was based on WindowsCE. Also, why would a map dvd have binaries on it? It is funny looking at the \config directory, it contains a script file to create the directory architecture and copy the files to them. What I am planning on playing around with when I have some time is \tpd\ntcBeu_eu_20060207\INFO15.PSC It contains some variables that might give some interesting results, such as TPD-ACCESS-ALERT, which by default is set to 0, and the description says that is a category number. Now category 0 does not exist (in \tpd\ntcBeu_eu_20060207\ENG\ENG.LSC), so I suspect a 0 means 'disabled'. I want to try setting this to the category I made with speedcameras, and see if anything interesting happens when I drive past one. |

Rob if you could post the DVD like that to an FTP it would be great. At home Im running a little low on space so with it straight file access like that I could pull down just the interesting stuff. I really wish someone could post actual details about how the CCC computer works. I wonder if we could put our own binary file (if we know enough about the arch) that would allow us to run what we went. IE a cmd prompt style app. Hell I would even be happy with just a basic listing of the dir/files on the computer. Even just a basic sysinfo would be nice.

Also, for those that do not know, the iDrive system has 2 separate hidden menus.
The first one is from the main menu (the 'i' menu with the 4 quadrants) - keep the iDrive button pressed for 10sec and release - rotate the iDrive controller 3 clicks clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 3 clicks counter-clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click counter-clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click clockwise - press iDrive button This one is mainly internal variables used by the developers for debugging it seems. For the second one, you need to enter the 'Navigation' quadrant, and press the iDrive controller down until your at the bottom section, now highlight (but do not press!) the "Map, indicating dir. of travel" option, and follow the following steps.. - move the iDrive button to the top-right corner and keep it there for 10sec and release - rotate the iDrive controller 3 clicks clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 3 clicks counter-clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click counter-clockwise - rotate the iDrive controller 1 click clockwise - press iDrive button The rotations to get into the 2 menus are identical. This second menu contains things like true speed, as measured by the GPS. Lastly, the BC (BoardComputer), which is standard on all E9[012] cars, those with and without iDrive, also has hidden functions, but I have not really bothered with it yet. |

looks like the directory listing got a little messed up..
The ntcBeu_eu_20060207 directory is underneath 'tpd', and the remaining directories (ENG/FRE/GER/ICONS/IMAGES/ITA/SPA/TABLES/USA) are in turn under the ntcBeu_eu_20060207 directory |

Custom maps would be a bit beyond me. But I have managed to add speed camera POI's to my disk: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31499 |
