320d - How Stiff is Your Clutch?

This will be the last new thread regarding my experiences with Speed Religion. As noted here...

....a quick drive in the SR3 gave rise to many interesting points, not least teh operation of the clutch when the CDV is removed. But one thing that surprised Anthony from Speed Religion was just how heavy and stiff my clutch pedal is.

I had noticed that his clutch car's pedal does not protrude as far as mine. In my 320d, you really have to bring your left foot back and round onto the pedal to engage the clutch. Looking at ANthony's pedals, we observed that his clutch sticks out maybe 5 or 10 millimetres further than the other pedals. Now, I was expecting to find that mine sticks out a *lot* more, because that's how it feels, but while it definitely does stick out a good bit more, we realised that what is really making the difference is the fact that you have to use a lot more effort to depress my clutch than on the SR3.

How do others find their clutch pedal? Is this normal? Worth mentioning to the dealer?

Mine looks like its a tad further up than the others but the feel is the same as my Golf and much easier than the Polo. As its a new car (8k / 1 year) this is what I expect. Doesn't really take much effort to depress, just a light push of the leg (oh, and I'm a wee guy, 9.5 stone, no rugby players leg here)

Mine takes a good hard push. Not so bad if you;re only changing now and then, but a real PITA if you're in stop-start traffic. It's been that way since I got the car in June, with 2,000 miles on it, and is no softer now with 9,500 miles.

That pedal is the only stiff one she gets in your household mate.

Heh heh heh. He said 'clutch' :-)

I guess I asked for that. Just hope the dealer doesn't take the same approach.

And jjbirch, maybe just straying ever so slightly into the Too Much Information category there?

The gearshift (esp 2nd gear) and clutch pedal required a fair amount of effort to operate in my car initially. Both loosened up eventually, but only after I had covered around 10,000 miles.

I've always found this to be the case with new BMW's (although 2nd gear on this car was especially notchy). I've also driven some loan cars that were still very stiff after 20,000 miles +.

I think that the controls need to be operated quite forcefully, in order to 'run them in' properly. I don't mean excessive force - just firm positive action for the first few thousand miles.

I suffer from the usual stiff 2nd But I am very happy with the feel of the clutch. My previous 206 had STUPIDLY heavy clutch (hurt my knee) whereas the rental cars I had were both far too light for me, and it just felt like a toy car.

The E90 M-sport is imho just right, perfect for me.

I had a 320 D from new to 15k miles, clutch was stiff to begin with and stayed that way. Think is same clutch as 330D so had to take 500 Nm torque, hence stiff. Now have 330D auto as couldn;t stand the clutch, and the power is nice too
