F.A.O anyone with Rear tyres + inside edge wear
Firstly good afternoon from the Dangfando.
Right I suffer from inside edge wear, it hurts and it makes me cry it also then makes me very mad when the wallet has to come out again to replace another set after 4-5k miles. I have had my Alighnment done on a KDS machine by the best BMW dealership ive ever come accross, before anyone points out that i might need an alignment check. That was done in early November just 3 days before these new Conti rears were installed. Now I had noticed that the inside already had worn beyond belief... Very distressed about this but had an idea that I could swap them on the rims and have the inside on the outside thus DOUBLE the mileage I could get out of them.. I went to the ATS and asked them to do this. We got the wheels off and noticed that the tread was different outside to inside, and the fact they state on the sidewall ''Outside'' and ''Inside''.... something Will hollin noticed on his tyres (diff make though) The operator at ATS advised me that the compound is different outside to inside thats why its best not to swap them.. Dipped checked them and I had 7 mm on the outside and 5mm on the inside so not as bad as I thought but still loooks very noticeble. 2mm difference from one side to the other. In such a short space of time also. I todl him I blame it on the massive negative camber from the factory. He said knock it out and have less camber BUT not to do it on alreayd part worn tyres as it could through the alignment out and cause worse wear, but on the next fresh set do so. I also think the Non runflats contribute to faster wear because there less strong and cant support the Weight of the car so well.. He suggested knock back some camber and it will prob sit where it would with runflats anyway. Because the NOn funflats are not as supportive then its sitting far worse than if with Runflats ALL MAKES sense eh.... Something i will look into im sure within the next few months It does not help that i dont really do motorway miles and the fact i nail it out of slow bends from standing starts which makes the car squat badly increasing negative camber and wearing quicker. But at least i have the great BMW dry handling which i do enjoy. I dont really want to sacrifice that. If anyone has a sheet from a KDS alignment id like to know what Camber you do have and what sort of wear you are experiancing. Thanks Carlos

Is this not a common occurrence on the 335 cars?
Sure I have read of other people suffering the same fate. Carl, did this happen to your previous tyres? Do you think the drag racing has increased wear considerably? Question time over.

Coincidently, I measured tread depth this weekend after getting the car a few weeks ago (yes call me sad I even put in it excel):
>> O M M I DF 7 8 8 7 PF 7 8 8 7 PB 6 8 8 7 DB 6 8 8 8 I seem to have more wear on the rear outsides (2mm). When I first checked the pressure after collecting the car, I also noticed all the tyres were under inflated.

Well- collected the car with 4000 miles, then took these measuremens at 4450 and Yes, runflats.
Maybe from new, these tyres have less tread on the outside...

Read my post again mate, i think the runlfats are much better than the Non runflats for inside edge wear. Also you have only just got the car havent you.

Just had the 1st service today and the healthcheck advises that my rear tyres are a 'red' status (requiring urgent attention) and are bald.
This is what they look like: Still got between 4 & 6mm in the centre.... What do you think?

They did that too me mate, then asked if wanted to buy any
They also told me that my discs were mullered (front) I asked to keep them and when the new set wore out i put the original supposedly ''mullered'' ones back on my car. They look fine to me.

Hey buddy, sorry to hear of your predicament
Do you think burnouts and donuts might be increasing your tyre wear? |

Carlos, perhaps if you lower your air pressures in the rear, it might help - even out the load better.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167470 this was mine after 10k miles, (no track for me!) After noticing this I immediately changed to regular tyres (fronts fine) and kept these to put back on come trade in I don't think they are illegal as you can see the wear blocks still (more than 1.6 easily over 75% of the tyre) So far after 4k miles in the goodyears eagle F1's no signs of wear at the edges just yet! |

My rears went on the inside after 10k, i usually have about 60 kilo in the boot tho, Sodding around with camber will slaughter the handling. SE uses sport suspension, so no real cure.

I dont think that will work buddy, because of the softer not as supportive non runflats will sink more and it will wear the inside edge even quicker i feel.

Strange rear tyre wear
Hello to all,
First post here, but I've been reading the UK section of this forum for over a year now and found it great fun and interesting. I'm from Belgium and have a spacegrey E92 335d from 05/2007. 335 means it has the m-sport suspension as standard. Originally it had the 17 inch 188 style wheels with 255/40-17 rear tyres (Bridgestone runflat). After 14500 km (9000 miles) they had 4.5mm of tread left in the middle and had worn normally. Then I replaced the wheels for style 225m (19 inch) with 255/30-19 rears (also Bridgestone runflat). I've done some 15000 km on them and I've noticed there is a rather unusual wear on the inner edge of both rear tyres. In the middle there is 4.5mm left, which seems in accordance to the 17"(same distance, same wear). Seen from the inside there is a width of 0,5 cm where there is some minuscule tread left, then there is a width of 1 cm with no tread at all and then the tread appears again and has normal wear towards the outside of the tyre. The 1 cm with no tread doesn't even touch the ground when the car is at rest. Tyre pressure has always been kept at 2.8 bar (40.6 psi). Standard style 188 wheel is 8.5x17, offset 37, measured width of the tyre on the wheel = 254mm style 225m wheel is 9x19, offset 39, measured width of the tyre on the wheel = 262mm. So on the 19" the tyre is 8mm wider and the offset is 2mm more which means the tyre is 6mm more to the inside and 2mm to the outside in comparison to the 17". Could this be the problem? I dont't think so because it is the same setup as a m-sport with 19's. Or could it be that the 19" needs a different camber setting than the 17"? Something else ? Thought I'd ask here first (some guys who know what they're talking about) before I go to the garage. |
