stupid 2A82 code

Hey everyone,

My beloved n54 has decided to throw the 2A82 code randomly. I had this same code about a year ago when I first bought the car. Replaced the two vanos solonoids with gates replacements. Was fine for almost 7 months now I keep randomly getting the code it’s happened almost 5 times.

Does anyone know what I can try to fix this issue? I heard the camshaft ledges could be causing this or I just simply need to go and purchase oem bmw branded solonoids? Maybe clean out the vanos filters? I’m not sure does anyone else have any thoughts?

Post Could be ledges, yes

I would start by going through this service bulletin. If you do any still get the code, ledges would be the natural conclusion, according to BMW.

In my case I assumed ledges and replaced my exhaust ledge, but it was, in fact, the solenoids. I had replaced the VANOS filters, but just swapping the solenoids can be inconclusive if both are faulty. YMMV

Aftermarket solenoids suck and swapping is a waste of time. Replace both with oem and you should be good to go.

FCP has them for $125US. They are Pierburg, which make them for BMW and there's the lifetime warranty.
