Underboosting ESS 135i dynod. 313SAE @ 5.5 PSI!
Title says it all. The cause of extreme low boost is cat issues, it appears. The number of cat controls for the US DME blows away what's in the EU unit, and the car is running in safe mode.
Even so, the car made a silk smooth 313rwhp at 5.5 psi of boost! I think this is a new power:boost ratio! I can't wait to see what the car will make at a full 15psi. For contrast, stock LS2 Vettes generally make ~340 on this dyno.

i think that is impossible. You are telling me you are making more power with less boost than stock? It just dosnt ad up unless you are leaning it WAY out and it doesnt look that way.

Chuck,
Awesome! Glad to see you made it to they dyno today. My DME is on the way to ESS and I expect to have it back here in Dallas by the end of the week. It looks like we have similar setups (335i here with Helix IC, ar catless DPs, Forge DVs, Vishnu DCI) so I'm eager as well to see how it stacks up - you're coming from JB and I'm coming from V3. ![]() |

No. The is the dynojet log of boost pressure.

Perhaps the sensor on the dyno is off?

Something is wrong with the boost reading on the dyno. Maybe the "T" is loose. You can see logged boost rise with every pull. Yet hp remains the same.

At this point I'm sure boost is around 10.5.

No. I have Stage 3 MSD 81.
It is underboosting because they are working out how to disable all of the catalyst errors on American MSD 81 cars. The car is in a "safe mode", where boost is reduced, and AFR is very rich, to cool combustion and reduce chance of further ctalyst damage.

Indeed. Power was almost exactly what I expected given the boost I've been seeing. I figured 310-315, as that's what Dinan/SSTT cars put down.

so then stage 3 will throw the car into limp mode, what about stage 2 and just everything else stock is what I am wondering, I am leaning stage 2 ESS or LET Motorsport stage 1, the goal is no codes and no dealer detection of course

I would bet they will iron out the kinks pretty quickly. ESS seems like a legit company. I wonder if we could get some feedback from them in this thread...

It simply does not reach full boost. It is due to my catless exhaust. They are tuning around it now, should be good in two-three weeks.

Oh, so this should work fine in cars with all the cats intact? Whew!

We asked Charles to run this dyno today for us to verify power (and, of course, we paid the $175 for his dyno runs). And the envelope please:
What Charles is experiencing is the 50 lines of catalyst code in the US cars vs about 10 lines in the EU. The DME is acting to protect Cats it cannot health check and lowering the boost accordingly. The dyno boost reading is FAR off as you can see by the power gain. He is limited to about 11psi and the catless code for the US is being written as I write this. No problems at all. Catted cars do not exhibit this condition. It is not a limp mode, not a tuner code, and the car drives perfectly per Charles phone call with me today (albeit catless SES codes). I have already offered to pay for his DME to come back to get the US catless software later this week. We will take care of it! Customers first! ![]() |

Yep, ESS has been great. And as you can see, even running rich and udnerboosting to protect the cats, the car makes solid, SMOOTH power. The guys at the shop I went to (mostly big HP vettes and such) were very impressed with how the car drove.
The car drives wonderfully, and I can't wait to see the power it makes running full boost. I verified via an autologic (gt1 equivalent) that no shadow codes of any type have been thrown, including tuner codes. Quote:
