Help with oil top up (idiot in your midst!)
Folks
Oil light came on yesterday and having checked the computer saw it needs 1 litre of the good stuff. Picked up the Castrol Edge in Halfords on my way home today and have just gone to do the necessary outside. I opened the oil cover in the engine bay and it is unlike any car I have ever owned before. I am completely non-technical but in previous cars and my wifes motor you can clearly see the 'hole' to pour the oil in. With the BMW it looks like I would be pouring the oil into a 'void' - not clear to me where I should aim Someone put me out of my misery here please - am I being completely daft? Thanks as ever!

Under the "Castrol" badged cover? Just pour it in, use a clean funnel.
Just put a 1/4 litre in then check again.

Sit in the drivers seat, to the left of the idrive is a rectangle shape in the dash, press it.
A hole comes out, pour oil into that mate.

My 330i has never moved from full in 48km miles? I wouldn't expect anything else from a well looked after modern petrol engine. Where the hell has 1 litre gone in yor 335i's? Also, when the oil pressure light comes on, that's a bit late IMO! as the pump is already sucking air in with the oil. Tut Tut - should be checking it more often then!! |

My 335i does tend to use a bit of oil - regular checking definitely the key.
Carlos - I poured mine in to the one on the far side of the dashand it worked fine.... |

True, but the low-level light (yellow) comes on before the pressure light (red) assuming oil level is low i.e. before the pump starts scavenging.

If its a 'level' warning, how does that work? The sump is only full when the engine is off, so the sump 'level' would be low when running? |

Yes, I think it "assumes" a quantity is up in the cylinder head and valve-gear. i.e. if the level falls below "x" then it's still going to be low even when the oil drains back to the sump and therefore light the yellow.
This is why on cars with electronic dipsticks it says the engine must be running before taking a reading - otherwise it over-reads.

You shouldn't have to wait for the yellow warning light, just scroll through the maintenance part of the dash and check the oil level. It will give you an output after 5 miles of driving.
Also, my 325i eats oil. I usually have to top it off once inbetween 5,000 mile changes. I don't like it, but one of the SA was saying something about smaller tolerances leads to a molecular breakdown of the oil and in turn just burns the stuff off. |

Yes, if you have an electronic dipstick - not all E9x have.

Good news is that the car quite liked the Castrol Edge and seems satisfied for now. For info, Ihave just gone through 10,000 miles so the 335i is about as thirsty for oil as my old Mark V Golf GTI.
