PNW Drag Day: 3.29.09: Newbs at the Strip

So after our dyno day last week, most the same crew headed out to Pacific Raceways for some 1/4mile fun. Our first drag day two weeks ago got rained out (rain Seattle huh?) so we've been itching to get on out and make up for it.

It actually snowed the night before but after 4hours of waiting for the sun and track prep in the morning - it was off to the races!! This was the first time runnin 'n a gunnin for all of us so learning the track and having fun was the focus. We all got 3 runs in and improved as we got along. Nobody had DRs, just non-RFTs.

Track:
@ 3PM
DA: -943
Elev: 10ft
Temp: 48 deg F
Hum: 52%

Runs:
Septro / E90 335xi 6AT
JB3 1.3 8C on 100 Octane
BMS DCI

Run #1 (front wheel chirps/limp mode at end of run/map8):
R/T - 0.057
60' - 2.065
330' - 5.462
1/8 - 8.240 @ 88.71
1000' - 10.644
1/4 - 12.669 @ 111.34

Run #2 (Went around waterbox/limp mode at end/map8):
R/T - 0.344
60' - 1.813
330' - 5.242
1/8 - 8.055 @ 87.93
1000' - 10.479
1/4 - 12.535 @ 109.40

Run #3 (Switched to Map7, but wasn't adapted/no limp):
R/T - 0.043
60' - 2.0.18
330' - 5.552
1/8 - 8.459 @ 85.21
1000' - 10.952
1/4 - 13.070 @ 106.62

Comments: Don't switch maps at the track lol. JB3 1.3 felt extremely strong at the top end but was most likely too much map for the car. Beat SRT8 Challenger, Mustang Cobra, and a LS2 Firebird. I did not manually shift, launched at 2500-2600 all times - straight mash of gas. Second run, lower PSI to 29lbs all around.

330' - 5.940
1/8 - 8.872 @ 87.29

Run #3 (some wheel hop in 1st and had to let up a bit):
R/T - 0.335
60' - 2.386
330' - 6.048
1/8 - 8.955 @ 84.41
1000' - 11.397
1/4 - 13.473 @ 108.67

245sleeper / E93 335i 6AT
JB3 1.22 Map 7 / 96 Oct mix
BMS DCI

Runs: (need Tony's info, but his runs were 14.4, 13.4, and 13.1 if I recall)

AdamK24 / E92 335i 6MT
Stock

Runs: (need Adam's info but his best run was 14.2 @104)

There was another stock e90 335i but I didn't get his name or run times. Overall was a blast and we're definitely coming back next month hopefully with mods and some better grip.

Looks like a fun day and great times!

Map 8 on beta_8C is meant for downpipes and intercooler! Also beta_8C has a new feature that reduces boost when you switch maps for the first 10-15 seconds under wide open throttle to assist in adaption. Drag racing is an attention to detail business, no doubt you guys will all do better next time! =)

It looks like there was lots of moisture on the ground? Also, doesn't it look like the track runs uphill??

Well it hailed on us in the pits in the morning. But yea it was a little wet, track was so-so. I think it's just the angle of the pics that makes the track look uphill, I thought it was downhill

Some crazy weather here recently!

I didn't come close to the numbers I wanted to see, but had a blast learning nonetheless. Looking forward to more runs this year!

Great photos, thanks for posting. Wish I could have been there today (I did stop by about 3:30 and watched for awhile.)
FYI, the track is virtually flat through the quarter mile, then turns uphill a bit before turns 1 and 2 on the road circuit. That's why it looks uphill viewing from the start line.

Thank goodness for A/T. The track was pretty damped, they had actually ask for anyone to run their car on the track in circle for at least 20 mins. to dry and warm up the track. all in all great experience. Hopefully we will do better next time.

I think you did pretty good considering the trap speed on one of your runes. Looks like you can pull off a 111mph trap with some practice. With 6MT, you have to shift real quick with full throttle lifts between gears. 6AT have such a big advantage over us in this area. And once you can consistently pull off 110-111mph traps, then just work on your 60' times which need to drop by 0.3-0.4sec.

If you want to go faster with no more work, just run race gas instead of 92oct. You're really handicapping yourself with pump gas. Especially after all the heat that builds up when waiting in the line and launching from a dead stop.

Strepto-- What limps/codes were you throwing during your runs?

Cheers,
shiv

I'll get in some more practice this year before I step up to DR's/race gas. If I hadn't hit the rev limiter in 1st and had a decent 60' on my first run, I think I could've seen a 13.0-13.1 @ 110-111. I can't imagine the control I'd need with DP's and FMIC!

how was the track? looked like traction was going to be an issue just from the pics.

what is the elevation there?

I was running map 8 and the limp mode came on right at the very end of the run. It was most likely too much boost for the lack of mods I had.

I couldn't scan the car with the BT tool since we were running back/forth to each other passing off our helmets to help out.

I'm not sure what is worse, running best of 13.40 with the V3 or running 12.50 but limping on the JB3 beta map. I think I'll take the 12.50 but hold the limp please!

The 13.4 was at nearly 110mph on pump gas and with a 6MT. I think I'd rather have that than going ~1mph faster on a 6AT and limping on 100oct.

He also went 105mph and 108mph, a run in the 14s and high 13s. Not very consistent. Just saying both are embarrassing but in different ways. People have a fantasy of a V3 or JB3 car whooping on anything on the street, but say you line up at a stoplight you could easily run 14s like he did. Not cool at all.

I'll still take the limpy 12.50s! Looks like a fun ride from the video.

It's not hard to be consistent in a 6at . 6mt is another story. My traps vary that much as well. Hard to get a perfect run in when you are doing all the work yourself.
