got the oil level at minimum light...

is that normal? I just received the "Oil level at minimum, add 1 quart of oil" light on my dash. I stopped by bmw but the parts department was closed, the guy up front just casually said "u can just add 1 qrt of synthetic or stop by in the morning and they'll top it off"

I have 13,000 miles on the car... i guess maybe because i'm getting close to my service date that its time to add some oil?

The N54 engine burns oil...period. Although kind of annoying, it's totally normal. At least BMW will top it off for you @ n/c or you can do what many ppl (including myself) do; that's buy and keep at least 1 extra QT of the Castrol Synthetic or Mobil 1 Synthetic oil in your trunk at all times. Just add 1 QT when it says it's low.

btw, my car doesn't burn oil (or I never give it the chance to burn oil)

I do my own oil changes religiously every 5-5.5k and the only time the indicator has shown anything but full was after the break in oil change.

I've filled with 6.5 qts every time.

You haven't changed your oil yet? I've just got a few miles over 9k and I've changed it 3 times already. I haven't noticed any burning oil.

I've heard as low as 6, and as much as 7.

6.5, for me, gets the 'full' line so I don't mess with it.

Oh, I just thought of this:

When I installed my FMIC there was a good bit of oil in the stock IC @ approx 10-12k mi... if the motor isn't burning it, it's definitely going somewhere. This just justifies getting an OCC sooner rather than later.

I got the same warning around 9900. I guess I drive it hard. Here's the official oil list: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx

I got the Valvoline kind at Walmart for about $6 USD

Mobil 1 0W40 is what I use when I change my oil (I change it about every 6000 miles or so).

Dont mix oil to top it off. Iheard it isnt good.
Use the 5-30 BMW synthetic oil to top it off. Best to just stop by dealer and ask for a bottle they will just give you a bottle to top it off.

+1 for Mobil 1 0W40
I do it in the middle of service intervals (15K) at 7500

It's wierd how you have to do 0W40 for Mobil, but 5W30 for Castrol

P.S. I never had to add oil within 7500mil intervals

ok so i got this done today... i tried to check the oil in the lot but it was saying "measuring not available" or some shit...

as i get back to work it says "oil at minimum level, add 1 qt." .... now i saw the guy holding a qt of oil in his hands and althought i didn't see him pour it in he would have no reason to lie. so why is the car still saying its low on oil??

low oil warning light - I've had my car for 2.5 years and 22k miles. It has never burned oil. However there was a failure in this warning light circuit. If I remember correctly it was the sending unit that failed. Covered under warranty. Amazing how old technology can fail like this.

my low oil light comes on every 500-600 miles under normal driving conditions...one of the hundreds of issues my '07 335i has. I'm trying to find a way to get rid of my car short of selling it to someone else.

ive gotten one more frequently in the last 6 months than the 2+ years of ownership.

funny as it gets more common with the increase of white smoke at startup, and a slight increase in the famous whistle.
