Is there any insurance you can purchase to cover your new Car while you are doing 1/4 miles @ Infineon Raceway?
Any advice I'd be interested,,

given how greedy insurance companies are, there is no way they would *knowingly* cover something that even remotely puts your car in danger of being damaged. hell, my insurance company considers me "unsafe and/or unlucky driver", because i have 3 NOT-AT-FAULT accidents, and this alone warrants them to jack up my policy prices! this article right here proves my point.... http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/19/au...URE.html?fta=y

my safe driver discount was removed because of those 3 not-at-fault accidents i mentioned in my earlier post. my insurance premium immediately went from $650/6mo to $1400/6mo (and this is the cheapest i could find!!!). and since insurance companies now share your records, you are completely SOL. On top of that they also have power to suspend your car registration if you cancel your coverage with them...

Your GPS position is immediately relayed to BMW Assist when you get in an accident. When the insurance company gets that information, you better be stocking up on the astroglide. Bubba isn't going to be gentle. |

Unless you have E90 328 without BMW Assist....
![]() Also FWIW read your street insurance policy exclusions. If there is no language about "racing surface" in the exclusions section then you could argue coverage based on participating in a "driver training event". just make sure you have nothing that can take times, such as video camera, in the vehicle because then it comes 'timed competition' which is usually specifically excluded |

Recently reviewed this with my State Farm rep. No chance on any coverage even for non-timed instructor-aided HPDE that is educational.
For those with deep pockets, you really should be focusing on liability and not collision. It's costly if you damage a quarterpanel but not life-altering. Imagine if a freak incident happened like a wheel/tire flew off your car and struck a corner-guy or "innocent-bystander". Don't care what the waivers say, you could be liable. I'm always more concerned about liability coverage than collision on my miata or 335i. You need track day insurance, and there are two types. Know what you're paying for.

Does anyone even provide liability coverage for the track?

Have you looked into using umbrella coverage for the liability side? I talked with a Geico rep about it and read the policy contract.. pretty much anything that isn't covered by homeowners and auto policy gets picked up by the umbrella policy. really helpful to have in place in CA because the property damage liability offered by geico tops out at $125k and bodily injury tops out at $1MM. If you took out an old guy in an S55 that would probably run up against auto policy limits immediately, so the umbrella is pretty key to have in place in case there are other collateral damages. (i don't mean to sound like i am planning for carmageddon but ppl sure love to lawyer up these days) |

Yes, liability coverage is very important.
The track insurance shown above EXCLUDES liability. Once I started reasonably serious about tracking, I got myself an umbrella policy, as Nick suggested. It covers me for excess liability above and beyond my other policies, up to $5MM. I highly recommend it, echoing Nick's sentiments. An additional perk is that if I ever get kidnapped, it covers negotiation and ransom costs, lol. |

I have an umbrella policy already, didn't know they would cover a track incident though. Interesting.
edit: Just checked with an insurance rep. The umbrella only adds to existing coverage. So if your auto excludes the track so will the umbrella in most cases.

The BMW/MotorsportsReg insurance stuff will only cover a specifically sanctioned event with BMWCCA and possibly PCA and 1 or 2 other organizations events. These are the events that have very good records of few incidents. IE those events with good Instructors.

EDIT: personally, i wouldn't bother checking with the rep because anything they say isn't binding anyway. They are just cost IMHO. read the policy contract exclusions of your umbrella itself. If it isn't specifically excluded it is fair game (the whole point of the umbrella is to give you coverage for 'other' liability that your auto and home insurance don't cover). Check with your attorney not your insurance sales rep if you want verification (you'd need to lawyer up anyway to recover if your co tries to deny an umbrella claim) |

I have MetLife. My Policy says the Following as a DO NOT COVER.
any motor vehicle while competing in, practicing for, or preparing for, any prearranged or organized racing, speed contest, hill climb exhibition or other contest or demonstration. So it would be VERY iffy to get a DE covered, not Impossible, but probably Improbable.

Exactly. Don't assume anything. Umbrella doesn't cover where other insurance isn't covering, it just adds on to existing coverage. That's why it's so cheap.
