Help! Petrol spill on paint protection --> clearcoat
Hi everyone,
Today while filling up at petrol station, about 50ml of Caltex RON 98 petrol in nozzle spilt outside the tank and ran down rear quarter panel onto wheel arch. I immediately splashed water onto that area. I got paint protection so I guess that layer is gone over that area. I tried searching but no info whether BMW clearcoat is petrol proof or not. If anyone got info/experience on this matter, please let me know. I would think this kind of accident would be common. Thanks in advance. Toan. |

The clearcoat isn't that fragile that a brief encounter with petrol is going to strip it away. Rinsing it with water should have removed most of it and protected the clearcoat. I keep a bottle of quick detailer and some microfiber towels in the trunk for when a few drops of gasoline fall onto the painted surfaces.
Just don't let it sit there for awhile and you should be fine.

You might want to wash the car and wax that little area. It will strip protection off the paint, but otherwise you'll be fine.

It's not going to hurt anything when you rinse it off like you did. Just wash it thoroughly at home and put a layer of wax on it like others have said. Don't worry at all.

Not to sound nerdy, but bird shit has extremely abrasive uric acid (pH ~ 3.0-4.5) in it, as it is both shit and piss. So that's why it takes paint off of your car, among other things. Bio 162 ftw.

Good to know the scientific reason behind me swearing up a storm when a bird drops a load on my hood.
