HPDE using UHP tires?
Hey, so I am wanting to take my 335i to an HPDE with the BMW CCA, but I am wondering if my tires will be sufficient for the event. I currently have Bridgestone Potenza RE760s, which are Summer UHP tires. I used to have Michelin PS2s, but I honestly got tired for paying for them and having to replace them so frequently. My Bridgestones definitely do offer good grip, but don't offer the confidence of my PS2s in my opinion. I have never participated in an HPDE before, so I just don't know how these tires will do. I doubt I'll be giving my car all she's got as this will be my first time on the track. What do y'all think, should I be fine on those tires or should I wait till I eventually can invest in a track rim/tire set?
When that day comes, I'll be betting I'll be getting some 17" Kosei K1s with Dunlop Z1 Star Specs, but I just don't want to throw down $1,300 for that quite yet.

Well, you are going out to just have fun, so yes the tires will be fine. It's not a track car. Just go drive and have fun the HPDE isnt competative anyway

I really like the Hankooks. The price range is almost the same as the General UHPs but the performance is tons better.
Either the K104 or the Evo12. Evo12 is the better of the 2. Hankook makes better tires but the above is in the same price range as the UHPs.

he is running the Potenza RE760's which are rated as a "Ultra High Performace" tire. Not the General UHP

So, really I'm asking is it OK to use summer ultra high performance tires on the track rather than max or extreme performance tires like most have for track use.

Any summer tire will be fine for your first school. You are going to be learning the car, the track, and your skills more than anything.
The only thing that could be bad is all season tires - because they have lots of siping and that causes the tire to wear extreamly fast on the track. Also, full tread depth tires (especially with small tread blocks) tend to chunk on the track. I was running with a well driven 5 series once that went through a set of newish tires in one day because they were at full tread depth and just chunked to pieces by the end of the day (this is a lot worse with FWD cars). Really, if your tires aren't chunking, you'll be fine. Talk to your instructor if you have detailed questions. Quote:
