Dealer issues with oiled filter

Just an FYI to be aware of.

I had to take my car in for another HPFP failure and the dealer got on my case about my replacement filter (oiled ITG). They claimed that the oiled filter style allows oil to accumulate on the mass airflow sensor and will eventually ruin it.

They strongly suggested I put the stock filter back in.

Again, just an FYI.

Ask them to show you the MAS airflow meter on a 335i . Make sure the GM or the dealership is there and so is the service manager. Should make for an interesting situation

thats true, but mainly on N/A cars.

also depends on where the MAF is located on the induction system.

It has very little to do with N/A or TT. Has more to do with the fact that the 335 is MAP not MAF. Besides only an OVER oiled filter will case issues on a MAF sensor. Correctly oiled is no issues. Even if there is an issue clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner and it will be fine.

The no doubt they "strongly suggest" you get all your services done at that dealership too. I strongly suggest you take your car to someone that knows their ass from their elbow.

I have always found this video about oil contamination to be a rather scientific way to debunk the dealer claims.

http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/2MAFSensorVideo.htm

Not that it will do much to change the dealer's position of having modified your car.....but interesting nonetheless.

Great idea...if you never intend on going back to that dealership.

He shouldn't, he might drop it off one day for an oil change only to find out they replaced his n54 with a n52 because his MAF went bad.

At least he'd have a reliable fuel pump..

I had an oiled ITG in my E36 for about 6 years and never had any problems with the MAF.

And perhaps the saddest part...up to this point, I thought this dealer was actually quite good. Unfortunately where I live, they are pretty much the only game in town.
