All,

I finally bit the bullet and removed my driver and passenger door window tint.

I ran up to the local police station and had them put the "Tint Meter" on my window, after the tint was removed.

Factory tint on my 08 E92 328xi is 27% (blocks out 27% of the light)... we are legally allowed 30% here so I guess I cant put anything on at this point.

Just an FYI in case you have different laws in different provinces.

If you were to put a 30% tint on top for example, you would end up with 57% tint ( or 57% of the light being blocked out)

hmm..interesting. When we quote 20%, we refer to allowing 20% of light through. Having spoken to BMW service in London, 90% of people get 20% tint and they never get any hassel from the cops.

Yeah, there are 2 schools on this.

Reverse my numbers and you have what you are referring too. with 27% tint , you are letting 73% of the light through. (therefore placing tint with approx. 50% blocking capacity over the 27% factory blocking capacity = 80% light blocked, OR 20% of the light in.)

Cops here reference it as "30% of the light is allowed to be blocked out" .... 70% of the light being allowed in.

All kinda confusing for a grade 9 math flunkee this would be

No.

Its 30% blocked as compared to a baseline un protected glass pane which allows 100% (for discussion purposes) of light. The films are pre-set at factory and the installer simply orders the tint film with the desired % of blockage.

So that would be 30% blocked on top of the 27% done at the factory.

You're incorrect. The % referred to when looking at tints is the amount of light the film lets THROUGH, not blocks. That's why 20% tint looks darker than 35%, because it only lets thru 20% of the light. It's called "% Visible Light Transmission".
