New Exhaust/ Black Powder/Burn Smell?
Hello,
I apologize in advance if these are stupid questions but forgive me I am new to the modding world. I was wondering if you all had the same experience as I had when replacing my stock exhaust. I bought a Harman Motive exhaust for my E90 Sedan (335i), after putting about a 100 miles on it I have noticed a few things that are strange. First off I get a lot of Black residue, powder like substance near the tips of the exhaust. Second, after driving the car it always smells like something is burning. I am guessing its just the heat from the exhaust? Third, For those of you who have the Harman is it really loud during a cold start? When I start my car in the mornings my windows rattle on my garage door! Your feedback would be greatly appreciated! ![]() Regards, BMFUNATIC |

I bet it's the exhaust breaking in, there is probably some excess sound deadening that is burning out causing the oder and the black powder. I wouldn't worry about it, give it a month or so. But just to be safe it wouldn't hurt to check the install to make sure the pipes are not rubbing or touching anything they shouldn't.
In regards to your third question, I don't know, but aftermarket exhausts are generally louder, so that doesn't surprise me. |

Ummm, I love the smell of burning stainless in the morning.
It smells like...Power.

![]() Also, it's normal for your exhaust to be a bit louder than the usual for first min or so after a cold-start. It's true for a stock exhaust as well, but I suppose with an aftermarket one, the difference is much more noticeable. I believe it's because the engine is idling at a higher rpm to warm-up the cats as quickly as possible. |
