Upgrade ZSP non-paddle steering wheel to ZSP paddle steering wheel
Basically I want to upgrade my 330i Sport Pkg w. A/T steering wheel to the OEM 335i Sport Steering wheel with paddles.
Can I safely assume I can swap my current steering wheel trim and airbag into this 335i wheel with paddles? I know I also need the harness from these guys: http://www.burgertuning.com/paddles.html "You will need to purchase a paddle shift steering wheel, the paddle shifters, and a steering wheel control module" Anyone knows what the steering wheel control module exactly is, what it costs and where it goes? Anyone that has one of these items for sale, PM me. Thanks.

bump b/c i'm wondering the same thing...
I have a msport wheel with all the necessary parts and it already has paddles. Will adding this to my non paddle shifter equiped vehicle have any issues or is it automatic plug and play? or do i need something else like this above link suggests? Thanks in advance! |

I have asked BMS (the harness company from the link above) what else was needed.
Besides their harness, the steeringwheel and paddles, this is what you also need to make it work: • (1 QTY.) Steering Wheel Controls/Switch BMW Part # 61319123287 (order it from getbmwparts.com, approx $97 + shipping) Tools Needed: (Paddle Shift Retrofit) • 10mm Wrench/socket to disconnect the battery (Included in the OEM bmw tool kit above the battery) • Large flat head screwdriver (prying the center console up, steering column cover removal) • Medium flat head screwdriver (removing the airbag) • 16mm socket with extension (steering wheel removal) • Wire coat hanger or equivalent to pull the harness through the dash • T20 & T30 torx tools (steering wheel parts) I should have all the ordered parts in before next weekend and I am planning to do the mod over the weekend. I'll keep you posted on my installation.

Paddle installation completed!
I just got done with mod non-paddle to paddle shifters!
Thanks to the clear installation instructions from BMS, it was not that hard. Just take your time and double check all connections before putting things back together. It took me 4 hours, but I stopped for lunch in between the job. Here is what you need: Steering wheel with Paddles (bought it from an inmate) BMS harness Mutli Function Harness - BMW Part # 61319123287: $106 (shipped from Tischer) Worth it? To me it is, I just went for a test drive and love the paddles! The car seems to shift much more responsive compared to the + and - shifting with the A/T shifter! Before the mod, standard OEM Sport Steering Wheel 330i (with thumb rests): After the mod. standard Sport OEM Steering wheel with OEM Paddles (no thumb rests : Here is what you need: Wheel with paddles, OEM multi-function button harness (right top corner on the instructions), BMS harness (lower left corner on the instructions), instructions, and +/- 4 hours of your time! Next mod, maybe a M3 wheel with DCT??? Tempting.... This will do it for now though...

do you need the dealer to remap/program anything or its just plug&play?
I'm sure that harness is OEM part and it might be cheaper if we know the part number

No reprogram, just Plug and Play. All you do is add 2 wires from the A/T to the steering wheel column.

1 more question..
If I already have a sports steering wheel, I'm guessing I do not need this part? Mutli Function Harness - BMW Part # 61319123287: $106 (shipped from Tischer)

YES if you have a pre 09-2008 build car with multi-function buttons you will need BMW part# 61319123287. Reason being is that the connector from the paddles connects into the back of the housing of the multi-function buttons. The multi-function button harness connector that goes into the steering wheel column has 2 additional wires (6) compared the the non-paddle shifter (4) multi-function button harness (pre 09-2008). Here is what came out of mine: BMW Part #61319123289
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...80&hg=61&fg=35 This is the stock non paddle harness that came out of mine. It has 4 wires at the steering wheel column disconnect. The new harness you need has 6 wires at the steering wheel column disconnect.

Rekla, just wanted to say thanks for this Post. It certainly helped me with my decision to do M-Tech with paddle shifters upgrade vs just a wheel
Took me 3 hours to do it with smoke breaks.... BMW design to access the battery in the trunk in the convertible drove me to smoking.... I would rate BMS installation instructions 4 out of 5. Two areas I wished they were more clearer and took me some time to understand how to remove central floor console and unplug wiring harness at the bottom of the steering wheel column to connect PnP BMS Paddle shifter harness. Also lesson learned. To remove central console put the hand brake ON and put the car in "Neutral" vs in "Park" otherwise it's PITA to remove it or lifted enough to get at the wires... Thanks again

bump this for questions.
Can someone forward me the instructions that you got from the harness? Also, when your in just "D" mode....if you hit a paddle, does it automatically go into "M" mode?

Good points on the install. I had a hard time removing the trim piece around the shifter and I-drive knob as well, but managed in the end. I had no issues figuring out the intentions of the steering wheel column disconnect. ska325xi BMS printed copy rights on the instructions. No, driving in D mode and hitting the paddles does not transfer automatically into M mode - nothing happens when shifting with the paddles if you are in D mode. Push the shifter manually into M mode and start playing with the paddles! Works like a charm.

Not trying to steal the idea and sell a harness
I'm putting up a DIY so ppl can do this for free without the harness. already know what to do but see if there are any easier steps in the process...it’ll be a great contribution to this forum. got it to work exactly like yours but ppl in UK can shift even in "D" mode so more info from you guys might help me and you to work like those in the UK

Not sure how BMS instructions that came with harness would help you if you're not planning to use their PnP harness. The instruction outlines: - How to remove the steering wheel. It's kind of similar to this DYI http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11825 - How to remove plastic steering wheel column cover which is PITA and even more PITA to put back perfectly. - How to remove central console cover. There are DYI for it on this forum if you use . Here is one http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7049 - How and where to connect BMS harness to shifter OEM harness. - How to disconnect factory Harness under steering wheel column and - How to connect PnP harness into the factory harness - How to put things back My understanding you're planning to take this route http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246114 Therefore the following will not apply to you: - How to remove plastic steering wheel column cover which is PITA and even more PITA to put back perfectly. There is DYI on this forum - How and where to connect BMS harness to shifter OEM harness. - How to disconnect factory Harness under steering wheel column - How to connect PnP harness into the factory harness Also it states very clearly on the cover page of the installation guide "This material is intended for the one time confidential use of the individual who purchased the paddle shift retrofit kit......" I would like to respect BMS's legal copyright law clause and therefore can't forward you the instructions.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but how much did the parts cost. I am thinking of doing this with sport steering wheel for a 335d with the sport package.
Thanks. |
