Things To know When Looking For an LSD

I searched but couldn't find the info im looking for.

What do I need to know, or purchase in addition to, the actual LSD?
I see a few for sale but says "only fits "such and such" made from this date -to-that-date"

What am i missing?

depending on ur build date and ur transmission, you might have a Welded stock diff or a Bolted stock diff... that is the biggest concern when purchasing an LSD, especially a used one. I believe some companies can tell from your VIN # if you have welded or bolted... the only other way would be to take the cover off the diff pumpkin and physically look at it. Good Luck... probably my next mod too

I'm as serious as a heart attack!!!

Depending on your build date and transmission type, your ring gear is either welded or bolted to the carrier. If it is Welded, you need to buy an entire pumpkin with the LSD already installed and send your stock one back as a core (or find a competent shop to separate the welded ring gear and tap it)... if it is bolted then you can just buy the LSD and swap your ring gear onto it.

good question:
if the OP is a manual and wants an LSD: he should get the lsd with the automatic gearing (342) instead of the lower gearing of the manual 304 (?).
this will give him better acceleration !

You need to :
Pull the old diff from the carrier
Remove that sprocket/crown/ring from the old diff
Put the ring onto the new diff
Replace the (new) diff into the carrier.

If the ring is welded onto the old diff - good luck transferring the old ring to the new diff.
(It can be done, but you need to get a machine shop involved to precisely extract, drill, and tap your old ring.)
(You can also call diffsonline and just purchase a gearset from them, which will get you a new ring)

That's the problem you encounter with:
Manual Transmission, post Feb 07
Auto Transmission, pre Feb 07

pics :

This is what you're up against:
Old diff on left, with bolted-on ring (and bearings are still on it too, and this is not a 335 diff FYI).
New diff on right, without a ring.
You need to swap the ring (and bearings) to the new one.

Look at the BIG sprocket. The one with the biggest teeth.
(It's got some yellow on it).
On the left side of that sprocket, you see the heads from the bolts that screw it onto the differential.
(You can see 5 of them from here)

Ring attachment via bolts (note, this is an eaton diff, held in a vice):

Another similar pic (different differnetial)

Imagine last image, flipped 180 degrees (albeit this is a different diff pictured)

Thread to a guy doing a gearset swap (much of the same procedure as a diff swap)

And just for fun, what looks like an OS giken LSD, exploded :

I beleive you mean Post Feb 07 for the auto. Pre Feb 07 most likely has a bolted diff.

FYI, mines Jul 07 built auto, but still got the bolted diff. if your final drive part no ending in 152 for example 33107566152, then yours bolted.
