REQUEST: Make your own Plug and Play Harness?
Hey guys wondering if anyone has looked into or seen where you can buy parts to make your own Plug and Play JB3 harness.
It looks very simple but I dont know where you can get male and female ECU sub-connectors. I feel like once you have them and a bunch or wires, you can make your own... ThoughtS? |

I was thinking of taking my harness to china and seeing if the people in my factory could duplicate it...
It is definitely possible, I think I am going to get a first batch of 10 or so and test it out before I give them to friends ;-)

PLEASE LET ME BE A TESTER... worst thing that could happen is they dont work.. i really cant see it being that hard to make a male and female to our ecu sub-connecters. and then just taking the pinout and replacing the wires.

If you look at my guide on how to make your own DEI shock sensor harness, it shouldn't cost you more than a few bucks. I sourced Pins from Jameco judging by the picture here of a JB3 harness: IT uses the same pins. They're about 40 cents or so if i remember correctly for a line of 10, and you'll need the matching female pins. Those connectors would be the only questionable pieces . You'd need to know the pin spacing and x by y dimensions (2x20, 2x30...etc) . after that it's super easy. PM me if you need help. and go read my guide on the 2nd version of my harness to see how i did it. It's the exact same concept, just you're using more pins. judging by the photo, it looks like 2x13, probably .1 spacing on the contacts. here's your proposed parts list, and total cost, not including time and wire. I say 30, even though you need 26, because you can only buy in sets of 10. 30x Female Post connectors ![]() 30x Male Post connectors ![]() 2 x 26 position housing: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=A25846-ND also looks like there are some 2x22 housings there, so youll need something for that as well, such as this: 2x 44 position housing : http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=A25891-ND total cost for everything I see in that photo, about 25$...yeah...that's really expensive. If you want me to make the cable for you, I can, but I'll probably charge 40-50$ each for it, since that's a lot of wiring to do. shouldn't take more than a day to make with my busy schedule. For reference, here is my cable for the DEI, which is 1x8 pins ![]() I obviously don't have a machine to cut and strip wires for me, I do it by hand, but I've had a lot of practice with electronics over the last 15 years, and tried to get the wires as even as possible in length.

You're more than welcome. I know it might seem a little complex, but it's really not. If you can get the wiring layout for the Dsub connector, then that's really the hardest part of it. The crimp connectors I listed, take literally about 2 seconds per connector to crimp to the striped wires.
wiring the connector housings is really easy, considering that they are just straight through wiring jobs, with the exception of the wires that go to the dsub. I'd recommend you go with 20 gauge stranded wire, and not solid core. Solid core is harder to bend, so you might risk damage to the cable. stranded is more forgiving of movement. For your first one, I'd take my time and go slow, make sure you don't rush, because it would suck to have to start over when you were nearly complete if you broke something ![]() Also by doing it yourself, you get the acomplishment that you've done something for your own car by yourself, which is a better feeling than buying it from some place else.

Fantastic idea Alex! I never understood why they charge so much for the P&P harnesses. Well, I suppose I do understand - because they can. And BTW guys, if Alex actually gets this sorted out (and it sounds like he will) then rest assured it'll be a quality product backed by genuinely caring and friendly customer service/relationship.

It's a bunch of wires, housings, and pins... that's it. I don't know what a JB3 harness costs, but I'm sure it's WAAAY over the top. What are you paying for? sure 3 or more people to assemble it and cleanly cut perfect length wire....don't want that? make it yourself. If I went and made my own BMW out of parts I ordered from Tischer, would I be screwing BMW?

dead thread... but i just ordered this from DigiKey:
1 A34107-ND CONN D-SUB HOUSING PLUG 25POS 0 1.67000 $1.67 1 A34174-ND CONN BACKSHELL DB25 PLASTIC BLCK 0 3.00000 $3.00 2 A25891-ND CONN HOUSING 44POS .100 POL DUAL 0 3.42000 $6.84 6 A25875-ND CONN HOUSING 26POS .100 POL DUAL 0 2.32000 $ 13.92 125 A100846CT-ND CONN SOCKET 26-22AWG CRIMP HALT 0 0.08840 $11.05 130 A33420-ND CONN PIN 22-26AWG TIN CRIMP 0 0.22300 $28.99 25 A31910-ND CONN PIN 20-24AWG GOLD CRIMP 0 0.18900 $4.72 Subtotal $70.19 plus $10 worth of 20awg wire from McMasterCarr. I just got my JB4 upgrade and I want to make a second harness and keep the JB3 on hand to either: a. swap back in without redoing the harness back to JB3 config (probably have no reason to really!) b. keep on hand as a spare JB tune c. use on maybe a second N54 car if i get another ![]() d. resell as a complete JB3 system the trick is the existing BMS JB3 P&P harness has 2 sets of Tyco BMW proprietary connectors that you cannot really buy anywhere (without cost/hassle). all you have to do is reuse the one set of Tyco BMW proprietary plastic housings (ones on the male jumper end) on the second harness as the female ECU end. then both harnesses get the new generic Tyco conn housings as the male jumper ends. This idea helps someone like me who wants to retain the BMW ECU end interconnect for two harnesses. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you dont care or worry about how the factory locking mechanism retains the wiring harness to the ECU, you may be able use the same parts list to create one complete harness. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! There are some even cheaper component solutions, but this pretty much copies the harness within reason. Sorry Terry! but you could be saving some money by not using the proprietary ends on the jumpered side! I'm sure those are more than standard plastic housings.
