Anyone know a notary??
So I bought my 335i out of state a few weeks ago and forgot to get the bill of sale notarized. Both our signatures are on there but I didn't realize MD actually needed it notarized. Does anyone know a notary that would be willing to notarize the bill of sale for me? Or does anyone know if I even need to get it notarized? The MVA site seems to suggest that the notary is only needed to verify the purchase price and that I could just pay taxes on the book value of the car. Any help is appreciated.

Most bank will notorize it for free of charge if you have an account with them.
Also, in order to get it notorized both parties have to be present. In this case it might be a little hard. The MVA wants notorized bill of sale to make sure no one is putting low price on it to avoid paying taxes. I don't know about MD, but in VA if you do not have the notorized paper then they use the blue book value (in most cases it's higher as they will tax you on retail price). I always get bill of sale notorized just for the sake of having it for my record. Good luck. |

what raja said about notaries requiring both parties to be present is true, unless you find one that doesnt care...alternatively, you may be able to notarize your signature, then mail it to the seller for his/her notarized sig. that might save you a trip to chicago

I ask the questions you're afraid to ask.

The whole purpose of getting something notarized is to validate that individual's signature. That can't be done if both parties aren't there.
Go by the MVA on Clopper road and ask them what to do. MVA might accept a notarized statement from the seller verifying what price you paid, but trying to get a document notarized with only one of the two people present is unethical and probably illegal. |

I've sold/purchased multiple vehicles in MD so I may be of help. You have 2 options:
1. No notary is required but the tax will be calculated based on the NADA value of the car. 2. If you look at the MD bill of sale, there are 2 spots for a notary; 1 for the buyer and 1 for the seller. You can mail a new bill of sale form to the seller to get it signed and notarized then you can do the same afterwards. |
