09 or 10? - Advice please
So, after my 2010 335i coupe order was initially accepted, and then cancelled 10 days later (dealer found out factory couldn't produce any more 2010s for Canada - and all remaining allotments have been sold), I have been trying to see if I could find a deal on a car on a lot somewhere...
A friend of mine found an 09 that has all the options I want (and some I didn't want, but I'm fine with). I like the car. Given that it's an 09, I think they would be motivated++ to have me take it off their hands. Plus it's got a $3000 factory to dealer rebate and a little better interest rates. I'm leasing, but I always negociate the price from invoice. I got the invoice. On the car I ordered (but that fell through), the deal was 3% over invoice (I know you guys in the States have amazing below invoice deals, but this is Canada, and the coupe is still relatively popular.) A couple of questions: (1) Should I really avoid an 09 because it's going to be two models years old in a few months? I guess the residuals might be low?? My past history has been to buy out leases in cash if I like them. So I'm not worried if I'll be buying it out, but depending on how reliable this car turns out to be, I may or may not buy it out. (2) Do you think I could get the car for invoice? (as well as get the full factory-to-dealer rebate) Thanks a lot. This forum is a wealth of information. And I appreciate all the help I've gotten to date.

There aren't that many 09's left in Canada but to get a much better price you'd either have to wait it out or go for something that was less a fit for you. Haggle as much as you can, especially at the end of the month... but the risk is you'll possibly end up looking at a less discountable 2011. For leases, the MY is less important. There again, there are still great interest rates so if you do tend to buy your lease, maybe look at financing.
Bottom line is that you should always be ready to walk out on a deal that you are not happy with (the downside is that 335 engine is so hard to walk away from.....). |

For some reason, the deals on E92's are never as good as the E90's (volumes I guess). Glad you got your deal. It does make you wonder how long the 2009's have been on the lot. My wife bought a 2009 E90 in late June and it was built in January. She got a great finance rate (2.9%) and factory to dealer incentive. I tried to pick up a 2009 in late October but the choices were slim (I'm a 6MT guy but was considering a AT because that's all they had) so I ordered exactly what I wanted as a 2010. There was a 1% finance rate difference and the AT->MT switch (saved ~$1600) but basically the prices were similar.
Only downer is that I'm still waiting for delivery..... |

Yup, it's in Canada, somewhere.... The E90 6MT 335i is replacing an E92 6MT 328xi so am used to the tranny. I love the shape of the E92 with its long doors and slick rear end but I also think BMW did a great job on the LCI E90 and it's a little more practical and cheaper than the E92, so I went for 2 extra doors, offset by 70 extra bhp... M Sport too and Nav. The chances of finding that combo on a lot is about as high as my next car being from GM. The 328xi was also factory ordered (sight unseen, one of the first in Canada).

Well, not being from up north, I may be outta line here, but personally, I'd wait for the '10 since I hear that's when the e92 facelift comes along anyway, particularly if I could not find the car I actually wanted as an '09.
That said, if the dealer is sufficiently motivated to sell an '09, I'd jump on it. I'm just not that picky about how a BMW is equipped since they are all about the same and I'd not be disappointed with either of the e92's. I wanted a 6MT black, grey or white coupe with red and aluminum inside and frankly I didn't care about much else -- 335 or 328 -- or what other options it had. I bought the only one that was within 300 miles of my area and it happened to be a 335. I would have liked to have navigation, but I've lived a long time without it and still know how to read a map and/or call my phone company to get directions if I need them. Good luck.

Two other things I like about the E92 are the frame-less door windows. When you pull on the door latch, the glass retracts 5mm and then goes back when you close the door. Very neat.
