Service light help

Hi,

Tried to reset my rear brake service light that was on by following the reset guide....

Everything seemed to go as planned until the new brake pad service limit showed up as _________mls .

The brake service indicator is still on but now i have a red service indicator showing too.

WTF please?

Andy

Dick me.....

The red light is still on

So, I inspected the rear brakes when I was working on the car at the w/e, cleaned them out etc......adjusted the drums

Used the guide to reset the OBC as it was yellow for the rears.

The mileage goes to _ _ _ _ _ _ _mls and now I have said RED warning light.

Is this perhaps because I did not replace the sensors?

Has anyone had any experience of this?

Will unplugging them and plugging them back in suffice?

All advice appreciated.

Regards
Andy

if the sensor was worn, it must be replaced.

The sensor was fine.

Bear in mind, there were no error messages before I reset the service light.

Just the amber "brake service in 300 miles" type one.

Now its like "RED ALERT! RED ALERT! RED ALERT! RED ALERT!"

Is this BMW bullying us into replacing parts at intervals rather than when they are done?

Its a good possibility that the sensor is damaged, not the part that goes onto the disc but possible snapped wire as they are quite thin. I noticed on removing mine at rear brake change that I had snapped a wire as it comes out of the sensor but I was renewing anyway. I think the car is telling you it cant calculate next mileage. Did you renew pads ? or just inspect

Dude......I took the wheels off and looked at the pad thickness.

I put the wheel back on.

The sensors are not borked, resetting the service coming soon light caused this because I did not renew the sensors.

That is shit

Right.......I am losing it.

I pulled the back wheels and started inspecting everything for any damage, notably to "sensors"

WHAT F@@KING SENSORS?

Just to be clear, there is nothing.....NOTHING with anything resembling a wire or a sensor of ANY kind near either the caliper. the internal drums or any of the pads on the back brakes.

NOTHING.

See below for how things stand.....

1. Scary ass indicator in red that stays on even when the key is out. I have also noted a little ((!)) symbol???
2. I reset the fronts too and they are still lit in teh service itsem with no mileage
3. I reset the rears initially and they are the same as the fronts.

Please help

Please

Or the car gets it

The rear sensor is on the drivers side and the front on the passenger. The cable comes from the inner pad and works its way through the brake bleed nipple cover along the suspension arm to underneath the rear wheel arch liner where its multi plug is situated, in fact there are 2 cables the other being the ABS sensor. Have you actually changed any pads as you aren't supposed to do a reset just on inspection and the system is designed so that you can't get to the reset menu unless the pad is over 2/3rds worn.

At last.....answers.....

Ok, that explains why i couldnt find it....curazzzzzy....but ill take it.

I didnt change th epads as there is a good 5mm left. I cant bench that against a new set though but I will be collecting some this weekend anyway and ill drop them in.

I was able to reset the menu without any problem, it just cocked itself.

This sensor, does it know exactly how much pad is left?

Any update on this. As i have the same issue.

My fronts were showing up as needing to be changed but there is quite alot still on there.

The rears were showing up as 2300 Miles when these are really low when i looked at them.

I tried resetting the service light on both now i just have the same warning light as above

Same problem here too. - was unable to reset front or back indicators. I unpluged the cable to the front sensor and pluged it back in then i was able to re-set the front but can't do the same for the back.

Note - the problem arrised after using a launch scanner to reset the oil service light (wierd)

Its because the sensor is worn down, it won't reset unless you buy a new one.......i did a thread on this ages ago.

Just to update you all - i replaced the rear sensor and it fixed the problem.

My pads have lots of wear left on them which is a bit strange and so is how resetting the service light can cause this prob.

anyhow im happy

Its still a load of dick to be honest......

There is still plenty of life in both front and rear pads.

The only reason the light came on, was because i tried to pre-empt a red service light a reset the yellow caution one.

There was no "your brakes are done" alarm
