N55
Hi everyone,
I am somewhat confused. On friday evening, I traded my 135i for a new 2010 335i x drive, and to my complete surprise, it came with the N55 instead of the twin turbo N54. I thought that they were not coming with the N55 until MY 2011? I know you guys will think I am mistaken, But, it says right on the sticker that it is the twin-scroll turbocharged inline 6 engine. I like the engine but am somewhat dissapointed because I was going to add a few mods to it. Do you have any idea how I would go about finding a performance exhaust for this engine? Thanks! -Bobby

There is a mistake somewhere on the stickers. Post a picture of the engine bay.

It would be. I've heard people with 2010 135 with the N55. They all been talking about how they like the low end torque kicking in earlier than before. And I believe after April production, the 2010 X6 will be getting the N55 as well with the 8 Speed Auto. Also announce will be the BMW X6 xDrive40d for 2010 as well.

Hey guys,
I can understand that you have a hard time believing that it came with the N55, but that is not only what the sticker says, but I can also feel that it is not as fast as the N54 that I had in the 1er. However, it definitely has more power past 5,000 RPM, where our N54's run out of breath. It is a Much higher revving engine, but it just doesn't have that insane power of the N54. I have taken numerous pictures of the engine bay, but I am having problems uploading the pictures. I have them in Picassa, can someone tell me how to post the pics? Also, guys, I can assure you that I am not some guy looking for attention on a car forum. Another member had mentioned that he was buying a 2010 335i x drive, which was at the port, and he was wondering which engine he would receive. To be honest, part of the reason that I bought the 335xi, aside from the fact that the 1er just wasn't good enough for my skiing trips to VT, was the N54 and how easy it was to mod, etc. I will definitely post the pics after learning how to do it. But, does anyone know where I could get a performance exhaust for the N55? That is the only mod that I really want right now. I had the performance exhaust on my 1er and Really miss the sound. -Bobby

I'm a computer idiot! I'm not sure how to do that. Isn't there some way to just copy and paste?

if you're basing it on the "TwinPower" label, thats the marketing term bmw has adopted for both the N54 and the N55.
does your sticker say Valvetronic on it? no valvetronic, its not the N55. (the N55 has not been epa cleared yet, so there's 0 chance they're releasing cars with it, there would be huge fines for BMW)

If I did this correctly, this should be the link to the picture of my N55 engine.

Left click on the album you have the pics in. Select "Upload to Picasa Web Albums". A dialog will pop up. Press the "Upload" button. Once done, you'll have another dialog with a "View Online" button. Click that. Your browser will launch. Once you're there (may require login) copy and paste the URL from the URL bar into a post here. -Rob |

thats an N54. you can see the old style oil cooler attachment, AND the TWO vacuum accumulators, one for each wastegate. the N55 only has one since it has a single WG.
this is what an N55 looks like: N54: what you have:

Are you sure? That is outstanding news! But, this is what it says on the sticker: 3.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC), 24 valve-inline turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and Double-Vanos steplessly variable valve timing. Is that the N54? If so, I feel like an idiot for giving bad information, but would be Really happy because I love the mods for the N54.

3.0-liter, turbocharged 6-cylinder engine, 300 hp Generating 300 hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque at 1400-1500 rpms, this advanced inline six is our first turbocharged engine offered in the U.S. in decades. Turbo lag has been virtually eliminated, thanks to Double-VANOS "steplessly" variable valve timing, direct fuel injection, and BMW's inspired use of the latest TwinPower Turbo technology. By using direct fuel injection - a high precision fuel injection system - we have overcome the traditionally poor gas mileage of turbocharging. The engine's innovative design includes an all-aluminum engine block with cast iron sleeves for durability, and a direct fuel injection system that also cools the engine. A cooler engine allows for a higher compression ratio (10.2:1 vs. 6:1 and 7:1 in other turbos), which translates into superior emission control, greater fuel efficiency and, most importantly, a thrilling performance. http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...rformance.aspx, Click on the "Engine" tab and then the "turbocharged 6". -Rob Last edited by rwalker; 02-07-2010 at 06:47 PM.. |
