My GF is in the market for a new car, all she can think of is the GTI. we picked up a DSG home yeaterday for a test drive and will be returning it today. she is now torn between the DSG and the Manual tranny.
her liking for M/T: fun and more driver oriented according to her in regards of the shifting ![]() her liking for DSG: we will have two cars in the household and my E90 is already a M/T so she don't know if both being M/T will be a good thing. although DSG is a quicker version, if she decides to get DSG at the end, she won't even be using the DSG that often, she don't like the paddle shift/manu-matic feel. if it was me that is in the market for the GTI, i would go with the M/T, but in the end it'll be her that will be driving it most of the time. drove the DSG a while last night and didn't really like it when shifting with the paddles, don't know why but just plainly didn't like it ![]() and plus, saving the $1000 from getting a DSG is a big plus for me ![]() are there any other pros and cons between the DSG and the M/T? i'm really new to the V-Dubs so i really don't know much. still researching though but her decision is needed soon within a week or two. well, hope after reading the feedbacks can help her decide. TIA ![]() |

if you already have a m/t, might as well go with dsg. there's nothing better than dsg when it comes to the automatic so you can enjoy it for what it is. plus replacing the clutch is one less thing you have to worry about.

I want to say there is some service needed for the DSG at a relatively low interval (30k?) and the cost is around 350-500 for this service. You would likely be better served looking it up on VWvortex or similar.
I have always owned manual cars the C63 being my first auto. I have to say if you drive through traffic...the auto is godsend. I've driven the VW DSG and I walked away amazed on how responsive it is.

My old one was an M/T. I loved that car. I've always kinda felt like certain cars just deserve a manual, such as Mini Coopers and GTIs, because the M/T is so good in them. It suits the personality better.
I LOVE the VW DSG though. It's absolutely stunning. |

MT.
You're on these boards, so you see all the threads with SMGII/III and DCT issues. The DSG is a very similar transmission. In the long run, the MT will cost less to fix(if you're skilled enough, you can even do a clutch job in your garage) but the DSG is going to take a professional that has been trained on those specific trannys. Plus, nothing beats a three pedal car. |

VW has 10 year warranties on their DSG gearboxes. I don't think long-term ownership costs should be a consideration, except for regular maintenance intervals.

The DSG really does suit the turbo delivery better but if she prefers the manual and feels more comfortable with that setup then why even push the other option.

If the transmission fails, you still have to take it in to fix, which is a waste of your time and energy. You may be without a car for a few weeks. So if the transmission has a problem, it can still affect you short term.

returned the vehicle this evening. just asked him a quick q, he said the DSG warranty goes with the vehicle's warranty. so i'm not sure about the 10 years warranty on the DSG, or maybe the sales doesn't know about it at all.

OP, you say she won't be using the paddles much anyways, so why bother with DSG? dsg only make sense, imo, if you (a) care about every last second of your time on a track.. (b) have lots of commuting in crappy traffic..(c) some sort of health issue forbidding you to use the third pedal edit: carbon build up is an issue on the older fsi models..supposedly the newer ones don't have this issue..but who knows?

Are you guys telling me that in the USofA when you car has a problem they don't loan you a car while your's is in for repart?
That sounds incredible, over here it's common practice to receive a loan car on these class of cars and I will take this a bit further, when trading in the wife's last GTI to replace it with the new one the dealer gave us a loaner for 2 weeks before it's arrival just because we had been offer a better price selling it straight than his trade in figure. |

^ Depends on the dealership you go to. Some may offer you a loaner, others charge you for a loaner.

Every transmission has it's problems, considering the amount of problems that the DCT from BMW is having I think this is shown into sharp focus at no company is immune.

If you have that thinking, would you consider buying a Toyota now that they have fixed the unintended acceleration pedals?

![]() The surprise that I have is that in almost every situation where a problem has been found and a recall put into action the fix has been quick and effective. This has been true for the DSG, so why has BMW had so many problems curing their verison of the DCT? I'm at a lose. ![]() |
