Fuel system cleaners??

Will I be ok running a fuel system cleaner through my 320d?? Reason I ask is that I have been having this issue with idel and BMW are not very helpful and it's getting to the point I am trying the basics myself first prior to an independant inspection.

Will I be ok with this or is it a no no with modern diesels???

Cheers
Alan

I wouldn't use any additives in a diesel engine with a particulate filter - but as yours won't have one, no harm in trying.

Doubt of it will have any effect, but worth a shot.

Why though?
What's the exact cause of concern?
Just curious..... :-)

Maybe the cleaning additives are corrosive to certain materials, perhaps some of which are using the the HPFP?

No axe to grind, but this is interesting:-

http://www.powerenhancer.co.uk/news/...tives-safe/51/

quote:-

"So why does my main dealer and car manual insist on no fuel additives?

This is down to a combination of draconian thinking and commercial protection. Firstly and unlike in the US, manufactures (fronted through their main dealers) have a vested interest in maintaining a “replace with new policy”. For example, if a main dealer plugs in their diagnostics computer and it registers a faulty diesel fuel pump or faulty injectors then they must advise the customer that they require a new pump or injectors.

We have seen a bill for almost £3000 to supply and fit 4 new diesel injectors from one of our customers! The fact that injectors and pumps can be reconditioned or that a good quality cleaner will 95% of the time resolve the problem is irrelevant. Main dealers have little choice and they risk falling out of favour with the manufacture or worse, losing their franchise if they deviate from the “replace with new” policy. If you accidently put a stain on the carpet would just replace the carpet without trying to clean it first?"

Hmmmm.....

This part of the message he sent me

'bmw dont recommend any sort of fuel treatment, the main reason being, components in the high pressure pump use the diesel as lubrication, and the treatments can have a bad effect on this if they are too harsh, causing wear & failure'

That is exactly what I have heard. Similar principle to putting petrol in a diesel engine ie. washes away the lubricating properties.

Not a car but t'other half runs some expensive golf course machinery which is high tec. with diesel engines and he never puts any additives through the system for the reasons you've posted.

Maybe the premium diesel fuels help with cleaning and maintaining the injectors etc.

Well that is my thinking aswell and it more comon with the more people I speak with, I spoke with a guy in work and he told me thathe had issues with his car and it was down to supermarket diesel...so I am going to run with premiume diesel for a few tanks and see how it goes.
