Ok guys. I have decided that it would be a wise decision to extend the warranty of my 07 335i which is due to expire at the end of the month. I have looked into this and there are 3 options. Comprehensive, Named Component and DriveLine - all range from £427 / £380 and £322 respectively.
I have went through the details of what is covered and what is not and I just wanted the advice / opinions of anyone who has done the same. What did you choose? The cheapest £322 DriveLine seems to cover most of the component parts that you would think you would want covered, but the limit of a claim is £5K.

If you have idrive Comprehensive is the only option. Even if you don't - for the money I think it's also a pretty obvious decision. I'd rather have EVERYTHING covered.

Drop the emergency service though as it's expensive and not as good as AA or RAC.

I have an 06 car with iDrive, it was an approved car from a dealer.
So I have the full approved BMW 12m warranty at present.

As I normally keep cars for 2-3 minimum, can you guys suggest the best way forward after the 12m is up please?

The AA are going on-strike, so they're probably not a good choice just now. Before I had new car included cover I used Britannia and on the two occasions I had to call them they provided very prompt service.

Went for the full package with no excess £520, with the type of jobs I have had done under BMW warranty made sound sense in 4th year, or you could have the view that most troubles over. Was very tempted to drop the full rescue package though.

I'll be continuing with the full warranty package for the next year, been quoted £427 'all in' for year 5.

It is a no brainer for me, I've got a dodgy steering lock, fails to release some times. So that is an impending high cost solution. Even something like the panoramic roof on the touring makes small fry of the warranty costs, if BMW need to skip it, if something goes wrong. (And they do, at over £2k to fix)

If you have a BMW warranty, or BMW insured warranty you will be offered an extension (if you qualify) before the current expiry date.

There are terms and conditions, which include keeping with BMW garages for the servicing of the car.

I got the comprehensive cover from BMW and guys the rescue service is not bad, I left my keys in the boot of the car and my spare was with the misus (she was 300 Miles away) so called them on a saturday and they came within an hour and managed to somehow open my boot via some wiring loom near the boot hinges. I dont think AA or RAC would have been able to do this, as the wouldnt know in depth, the wiring in our cars.

I extended my warranty (for 330d) on comprehensive, with £100xs, reduced the breakdown to 'emergency', and paid £32p/m (works out cheaper if you pay annually). Did me fine. If the breakdown worries you (think you'll lose home-start & european cover) then just join the AA/RAC if needed over the phone.

The limit of £5k should be fine - I had a new gearbox, clutch, flywheel done just before the main warranty was due to expire and that bill would have been £5k - you're car has to go pretty badly wrong to exceed the limit (engine is the obvious one but very very rare, I'd imagine, if taken car of).

Or, what makes much more financial sense, buy a new car with warranty included

i'm almost at the stage i can replace my car every couple of years with a new one, but not quite!!

They certainly cannot for the 3 year mfr warrenty.....

Yes they can, as it is an insured warranty. Different from the regulations on new car warranties.

From the small print...

When servicing your BMW, failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by BMW may invalidate this warranty. All service and warranty work must be carried out by an Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only Genuine BMW Parts. Your BMW Service Booklet should be stamped, dated and detailed with the correct mileage at the time of service by the servicing dealer.

Cover for comprehensive is up to the purchase price of the car including VAT

Yep i pay mine monthly then if i decide to sell I can just cancell it or if I keep it the contract just rolls on.
Its around £500 a year but I usually change my car every year and I am not doing this year so it works out quite cheap for me.

Just a thought, is there something in the small print that has you declaring there are no mods on the car?.....

My approved-used warranty is up for renewal next month and I'll definitely be extending it. Haven't had the renewal quote yet...

For breakdown cover, I've always had fantastic service from Britannia Rescue and will most likely take this out again as the wife's Freelander is coming out of the manufacturer's 3 year cover too this year.

Yes.

I looked into a BMW warranty for my old 330i and it clearly said, as well as tying you into BM servicing, that the car must not have any unauthorised modifications whatsover.

Same as BMW GAP.

They'll take your money then void the lot IMO if they find even a wiff of mods.

It's not in the dealer's interest to turn away lucrative cost-no-option warranty work though is it?

Agree that they are right to question whether something non-standard has caused a failure though.

Luckily my car is now over 4 years old and the dealer runs a four plus scheme which gives 20% discount on labour and 10% off parts, which makes it a lot more bearable.
