Moving to Newark, NJ -- anyone from that area??
Like the subject says, I'll be moving to Newark, NJ for work in mid June... Need some advice and general info and impressions on the city from a local... Like, what areas are good/safe to live in, for instance Thanks!!
Edit: I'll be working at the UMDNJ Univeristy Hospital, so closer to the hospital, the better... as long as it's safe for me and my ride haha

well newark was the car theft capital of the world for a while, but certain areas are redeveloping now and aren't so bad, specifically before market street

Before Market Street? As in North of it? Market Street goes right in front of UMDNJ University Hospital haha.

Lots of good restaurants there and some nice lounges. Not the safest place for your car if you park on the street as far as scratches and dents are concerned. I also know UMDNJ has what's called "guaranteed parking", but i believe it might be an extra cost per month as well. You might want to check with them tho. Good luck and hopefully we'll see you around at the meets soon!! |

wait UMDNJ isnt in the ironbound anymore i thoght UMDNJ is in north Newark.
but yea if your not in the ironbound area or if your house/aprtment doesnt have a gate/driveway/ or its own garge i sugest you invest in one but as alex says...very good resturants and good lounges/clubs.

Welcome! I actually work in Newark. I would definitely get a garage, if possible. The ironbound section is the probably the safest. The roads are not too bad there either.

The Vailsburg section of newark, near Seaton Hall U. and the Ironbound are the only decent places. Everything else around there SUCKS!!! The Ironbound is also kind of crowded but close to UMDNJ. I lived in Newark for 12 years and I'd NEVER move back to that shit hole but that's just me.
If I was you I'd find a place around Maplewood or South Orange. |

Never went to East side high, but passed it every day for 30 years. LOL. You remember Tom & Josephines Deli on Adams St right by the park? loved that place back in the day... they would throw the Italian feast there every year.

Thanks for the detailed info on where to live! That area looks PERFECT -- close to the hospital and Independence Park! I have no friends or family in the area, so I guess e90post members are the closest I've got What does the rent cost over there? UMDNJ had some housing, but it's like 570sqft 1 bedroom 1 bath for $1075... quite a bit more than we pay over here in Texas (as expected)

Thanks for all the input, guys! Very helpful!
Proximity to the hospital is a must for me, as I'll be on call pretty frequently, and as few hours as I'll have at home, I don't want to commute much. I'll most likely check out Ironbound, Maplewood, South Orange, and Keany for places to live. Thanks again for the input guys! Hope to meet you in the coming months!! You can bet I'll be out at the meets
