What happened to the Bimmer smell???

I have read a lot of threads on "new car smell", but my question is what happened to the traditional BMW smell??? My old e46, and almost every other older generation BMW had a distict smell. The best way I can describe it is that it smelled like crayons. You could get the car to smell like it on demand if you ran the vents w/o air cond & the moonroof cracked open...

My friends & I call it the "beam-stink"... The e90 doesent seem to have it.. Does it have something to do w/ the newer filter systems, and is there anyway to reftrofit an older filter & get the BMW smell back????

i didnt think you needed it, so i took it away.

umm... the bimmer smells vanishes as most new smells do... what your probably breathing in is the fresh scent of leather... you can just apply some of those leather enriching products to renew your "bimmer smell"

That lovely car smell is the smell of cancer. It's due to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)...the volatile portions of plastics/ plasticizers/ glues leaching out of the plastics in the car. There has been a real crackdown on use of VOCs around the globe due to their ability to cause cancer.

What no humorous threads alllowed? I admit, its crazy- but so are half the posts on these forums... Anyway- there was definitely something different about the plastics and/or air filtration on the older generations...

hey, if you want that distinct bmw smell, go to wal-mart and buy some crayons. Throw the crayons in your car and you have a long lasting smell you been craving for.

I've never noticed it in a BMW, but a friend's Jetta smells like crayons really strongly. We even pulled the doors apart and the back seat out looking for 'em lost somewhere. Maybe German vinyl/leatherette smells like crayons after a while?

I know exactly the smell you're talking about it. I like it, too. My e30 had it, and my girfriend's dad had an old 7 series that had the same scent. Not sure why nobody knows what you're talking about. It's not the new car smell because the old bimmers have it. Not sure why the new ones don't.

I found the threads on new car smell & plastics, but I couldn't find one addressing the difference in e90 vs. older generation bimmers...

Mine smells like leather. I like it and I'm glad it doesn't smell like crayons.
