rumbling noise from rear drivers side.

Hi all,

I've been meaning to ask about this - but not before I got it checked out. My car has 63k miles on the clock (M sport set up) and there's a faint rumbling noise coming from the back right side of the car/wheel.

It's been there since I picked the car up - but because I never really noticed it until a couple of days after I had bought it, I couldn't really take it back for them to have a look at (dealer 300miles away!)

It's not loud but is noticeable if you switch the radio off and concentrate. It starts at around 30mph and has a consistent rumble when travelling on motorways. I got a friend mechanic to look at it and he thinks it could be the wheel baring. I suggested it could be the run flats - but they've only covered about 7k miles. Worst case scenario - and it's the wheel baring - could I claim this off my extended RAC warranty? My friend says he could fix it and claim it back from RAC - but only by telling them that he had to recover the car as the wheel had collapsed.

My friend has a approved garage - but can't supply a courtesy car - which i really need. So how much would BMW charge to replace a baring? Has anyone had any similar problems?

thanks.

Garage List
It could either be a bearing (not baring, btw) or tyre noise.

Run your hand over the tyre - does it feel smooth?

If smooth, then careful listening to the wheel bearings with the car jacked up will tell all.

Does the noise change depending on the road surface? Does the noise increase when cornering? If the latter, almost certainly a wheel bearing.

Hi Ant - The noise is only noticeable on smooth roads/motorways at motorway speeds. So I can't hear anything on bumpy 30mph road.

Does the noise increase when cornering? not really.
