Question Tire insurance coverage questions

I pay almost $20/month for tire insurance on my 2009 335i sedan through IAS (purchased like most people in the Finance Dept. when I worked out my deal). My tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE050's.

I recently discovered a big bump on the sidewall of my front driver's side tire. I went to the dealer and told them and they said to call IAS. They also said that IAS would not pay for the tire if it's manufacturer defect (though I didn't understand whether IAS would reimburse me and then go after Bridgestone or I need to go after the manufacturer myself) or if the damage was caused by me hitting a curb or something. I don't remember hitting anything, but I do wonder... If this is true, what the heck does $20/month get me?

I did call IAS. They asked if I had hit something and I said no. Then, they gave me a claim number, told me to take my car to any tire shop, have a specialist inspect the tire and give them a call with my claim number. I went to SEARS and explained this to someone there and the clerk though my $20/month cover road hazard, which means my tire damage should get covered even if I caused it myself by accident, but this contradicts what my dealer told me.

What is it, people? I don't want to pay $300+ for a tire I'm pretty darn sure I didn't damage, especially when I'm paying so much for insurance.

Thanks in advance!

OK, so I called IAS and asked for a more detailed explanation. The agent I talked to took her time to explain everything to me in as much detail as I needed. She said road hazard is covered under my policy and the only reason they need an inspection done is to make sure there isn't further damage (i.e. wheel).

I am adding this comment in case someone with the same concerns finds my post.
