My first long crank.....fluke or should i be worried?
So my 2009.5 msport 6MT with 6200 miles did its first long crank yesterday. Instead of taking 2 seconds to fire up it took maybe 4-5...def. longer than usual.
I turned off the car and restarted it again without any issues and the drive drives normal as far as i could tell. Power has been down in general in this crazy NY heat wave (95+ and humid as hell). I scanned the car with the BT tool and zero codes came up except for 00A4 which isn't related but I also can't clear it for some reason. Should i be worried or is it consider normal for these cars to have a somewhat longer crank than usual from time to time? Wonder if this heat could have anything to do with it. Mods = JB3 1.4 map 5, Injen dci, RPI exhaust Alan

if it was 1/2 a second id say no biggie. but for 4-5 seconds i'd call a dealer and be prepared.

Eh, nothing to worry about until you start seeing fuel pump codes.

an occasional longer "than usual" crank can happen .. i'd start being alarmed if it continued .. like two or three times a week ..
do you drive the car on a daily basis?? is it garaged?? not that it should matter-- just a question mine is used to be garaged and hardly ever driven on the weekends .. just looking to get a picture of maybe up ahead ... mine still starts ok at this point.. 13k |

Ive been having on and off long cranks since Feb. Its the luck of the draw.
Some just do it, others need replacement sooner or later. Just be prepared, there is no concrete yes or no anymore, especially with no codes. |

From my understanding Map 5 is fine as long as you run 93 octane gas which is the only stuff i put in this car.
Hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come....

I had two long cranks last week... got me thinking but everything else has been fine. Hopefully it isn't anything major.

do you guys usually press on the start button once so that the dash lights lights up....then press it again to start the car or just hop in and start right away?
I know for my old car (suby) people use to do that to sorta allow the fuel pump to prime itself before actually starting the car. I've always hopped in, press on the clutch and start right away with this car. Alan

To the OP and others with similar symptoms, you better start looking through the 'HPFP Sized' Casket catalog now, it only goes down hill from here....My condolences......and No, you don't necessarily need to have any CEL's or Half-engine lights come on prior to your pumps dying. I'm on my 3rd in 20k miles and none of them produced any dash-visible warning signs, they just....died. If it gets to the point where the 4-5 sec. cranks become the Norm, don't wait for the Hard codes to be thrown, bring it in Asap and there should be enough evidence of a failure for BMW to recognize whether or not the pump is worthy of replacement or not. Give it a week or 2 to be safe of the prolongued Cold-Starts and then try. GL

I have a longish (3 seconds max) crank in the morning once every 2-3 weeks. Don't not start the worrying yet, hold out hope!!!!

Alan, bring it into the dealer for long crank complaint. 135, 335 & 535's come into dealerships for this issue all day long. Sometimes it wont throw any faults. The intergration level of your car is probably outdated. There's a bulletin for that issue to get a DME program update.
