Twin turbos in the back????

Was going through some you tube vids and noticed the artisan IS-F has it's twin turbos mounted in the rear of the car right by each muffler...are there specific reasons they decided to go that route vs actually in the engine bay? Thought is was kinda cool....and original...was thinking why we couldn't try that since we have no room in our actual engine bay for larger Twin turbos... ...any ideas

im pretty sure thats just because they dont fit in the engine bay

Ur missing the point...was wondering could we get around the fact that there is no room in the engine bay for bigger twin turbos by mounting them in the back...

Remote mounted turbos are terrible in so many ways. And only barely acceptable in large displacement, low boost applications were pressure loss/lag introduced by long induction and exhaust piping is minimal (but still very measurable).

In the case of the n54, we'd be better off cramming in small turbos, closer to the engine, and enjoyable a much better max power/boost response trade-off.

It's also worth noting that no production turbo car (or successful race car that i can think of) has ever utilized remote turbo placement.

STS makes alot of rear turbo systems. Guess its good for those who cant fit em in the turbo bay. Imagine the turbo lag though.

Remote mounted turbos do have a little more lag since theyre so far from the engine bay, but an advantage of them is that they run at lower temps since they are far from the engine. Another disadvantage is the sheer amount of piping to run the exhaust gases to the back of the car, and then another pipe for the air charge all the way back to the front of the car. Also, since these turbos are so far away from any kind of oil or lubrication system, a pump sometimes has to be installed to pump oil to the rear of the car where the turbos are. There are much better solutions that are possible for the 335i.

The piping to the rear isn't really all that bad, its very similar to a custom exhaust, however, the heat is best to be retained. Hotter exhaust = higher velocity = faster spool. The routing of the charge pipe back to the front is a great opportunity to increase boost response and all that... Good Idea when all else fails. Right now with upgraded twins we already have fueling problems with the space we can already utilize, no reason to go this route unless someone just wants a huge turbo for low boost high efficiency.

There was a guy on one of the Cadillac CTS-V boards who install a turbo in his trunk. He was the butt of many jokes and ridicule. The last I saw he was trying to unload the car on Ebay.

That's just because it's 'Merican.
Which means it has to have a supercharger - or else it's considered gay.

In all seriousness, there are remote mount turbo kits for corvettes.
I'd venture to guess that the guy just had one of those installed.
