Did I make the wrong choice for winter tires?

So I posted a WTB thread in the buy/sell/trade section and ended up buying some Dunlop SP Winter Sport M3 225/45/18 to put on my stock 189's for the winter for $425...

They've been used for only 1 winter season (~1250 mi, per seller). The front tires look in great condition (8/32) but the rear tires look like they have been really worn down... maybe 5/32 left... is that normal? Should I have paid $425?

Most importantly, do you think these tires can get me through 3 winters here, if driven on very conservatively?

since your car is RWD put the 8/32nds tires on the rear wheels and keep em even
the rears will wear much faster as normal on rwd cars, but it should even out a bit...
however I'm not sure you can get 3 seasons out of em
maybe if you do december-february only and drive rather conservative but i wouldn't risk running bald tires in the winter if they do end up getting too shallow

also from a quick search on tirerack, the price looks reasonable
you would probably pay 700+ for a new setup

Yeah, I think with shipping and everything it would have costed about $750 or something, so I basically paid 60% of the new tire price... Just wanted to make sure you guys wouldn't consider the worn tires as completely shot... The seller recommended I put the 8/32 tires in the rear, just as you recommended.

Cool, thanks a lot! I was starting to regret the decision because I purchased them kind of quickly haha. Thanks for the reassurance It's my first winter up here, so I dont' know what to expect...

no problem
in all honestly I'm hoping by the law of averages we get a calm winter
Last year we had snowmageddon and a couple of larger snowstorms, so hopefully mother nature goes easy on us this year

ROFL 'snowmageddon'... man that's crazy... I feel SO lost, coming from Houston where 1/4" of light snow shuts down the whole city...

Well get ready - around here it can snow 2 ft and you're still expected to get your a$$ to work...

They look decent, you shouldn't have any trouble. I have those same winter tires, they're great in the snow and they're decent on nice dry roads too. They've lasted me since '07 (Nov-April) and they're still in good enough shape for this year too.
