335is 2nd gear coast/deceleration rattle
Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this ...
Cold engine, no issues. Gear changes sound normal. Engine sounds normal. Once oil temp reaches just under half scale (just under 120 degrees in metric land), I'm getting a cabin rattle under the following conditions: a) coast in 2nd gear at approx. 2500 rpm b) during gear changes from second to third. This one almost sounds like a bad shift where the engine is still revving as the clutch is depressed. By far the more annoying of the two issues as it happens on every shift from second to third. Had me second guessing my gear shifts but the reality is that the noise is not there when the car is cold. Been driving standard for 25 years and this is my second 335i so unless I'm loosing my mind, there is some temperature related engine thermal issue going on. My current guess is that the momentary rattle happens as the engine drops in revs and passes the 2500rpm point. I have searched and I'm aware of the chronic N54 wastegate rattles and starting to wonder if this may be related. Given it is a 2011 model, I had been dismissing the possibility on the basis that BMW would have learned something in the last 4 years. Still gathering more data now that I'm fairly convinced that the problem is real. Anyone else having a similar issue with a late model N54 335i? Thanks. |
