No, he means High Dynamic Range. You take several photos of the same thing at different exposures and blend them together, so that the dynamic range (difference between dark and light) is far greater than you can get with a single photo.... but since you need several photos, HDR photos are almost always of static subjects.

Drew335 - have you had a look on Flickr? There are some really spectacular HDRs on there. Nice pic, btw

thanks Kaishang I should have mentioned what it was. yeah there are some great shots on Flickr but I am trying to figure out how to avoid the lighter coloured flare that appears around dark objects, doesn't seem to be much around on that.

thanks others for the comments

I've yet to do a HDR... but slight threadjack: if you are using an SLR and you are playing with HDR, you will probably like using off-camera flash, then you really get a lot of control over your lighting. Once the off-camera flash bug bites, it's very hard to get rid of....

thanks...guess that's a in more professional setup, do you have to manually take pictures in multiple settings and then blend them for HDR or is it a camera setting that handles it automatically?.. my Nikon point and shoot has something called a BSS(Best Shot selector) that does something similar though maybe not in the quality the above pic has but then again haven't really played around with it much plus Drew335 has top notch photography skills. If is similar, which of the BSS settings mentioned below would be a best fit to get pictures closer to the one above?

This is what BSS does
quote:
"Nikon's Best Shot Selector (BSS) mode extends to four options in the Coolpix S10. The first is the standard mode that takes up to 10 shots and selects the sharpest of them. The others are grouped together in an Exposure BSS sub-menu and cover Highlight BSS, Shadow BSS, and Histogram BSS. Each setting records five shots when the shutter button is pressed. From those shots, Highlight BSS selects the shot with the least over-exposure, Shadow BSS chooses the one with the least under-exposure and Histogram BSS opts for the best balance of the two."

what you need on your camera is "Exposure bracketing".

With this you can select a number of exposures to be taken in the same shot. The more the better, but i think people usually use 3-5. ie. -2 -1 0 +1 +2

My Nikon D3000 SLR doesn't have it

Alternatively, you can shoot the photo in RAW mode, and adjust the exposure in photoshop and make 5 differnt exposures then blend them into a HDR image that way.

A bit complex, but the results are amazing!!

Doubt my S10 will have it if your SLR doesn't, have an older Nikon E990 that has quite a few semi pro features , will check it out too..

Know it could be a lot more effort to get it profesionally right but found a quick cheat sheet explanation here though for those having to do this manually, seems could even trial download that software and make our own HDR's except for a watermark that will be left behind on the picture till you buy it

You should also do the exposure bracketing with a fixed aperture f/8 or whatever and vary the shutter speed to get the various exposures. So the depth of field will be identical one shot to the next.

didn't realise so many people were into the whole HDR thing!

I've been using exposure bracketing on a Canon 400D with an EF-S 17-85mm, have then been stitching together in Photomatix Pro and tidying up in Photoshop CS5. haven't tried it from a single RAW image yet, although will give that a go for those times when I can't get multiple exposure shots. planning on doing a shoot soon with a bunch of cars so trying to get the technique sorted before then

thanks Kaishang for the tip re off-camera flash, have tried it on single exposures but could add an interesting angle on a HDR shot.

anyway here's a few more overdone HDR images, that halo effect gets worse the more you process the thing! ah well still learning

similar to CSL reps they're called a 'GT-CX' and I bought them from Euro Division. check out the thread here they are the second wheel type down.
seem to be another version of a VMR V710, similar to CSLs but with a sharper edge. they look great although take a bit of effort to keep clean!

... what's also funny is that the camera on the iPhone 4 has HDR capability, in which it will take the same shot with 2 different exposures. Its not the quality you will get from a SLR camera, but its still an option that my SLR doesnt have!!!

That's exposure bracketing, not really HDR. It would be very difficult to make a HDR out of an iPhone photo (general lack of iPhone camera quality aside) because of movement in your hand between taking the first and subsequent photos.... the pixels in the photo won't line up.

might give it a go tonite and post up a pic. the pics i've taken 'look' identical, just different exposures.
