Noob HEadlight Question

Hey,

Did a quick search but didn't find anything on what I need to know.

I hit some debris on the freeway, busted out my passenger side headlight and will also have to replace front bumper...on 2007 E90.

I was going to just have the collision place do it all, but I was thinknig that I could get an estimate, have them cut me a check minus my deductible, and then I could buy perhaps better parts or save myself some $.

so instead of getting a new stock headlight, I was thinknig of buying some nice angeleyes, but I am a bit confused on the lighting type.

If I am not mistaken, 335i's have Xenon headlights. I thnik this type of headlight requires a power supply to up the voltage. What I do not know if this is 1) true, and 2) if it is, then my questions are....

1) Is the power supply built into the headlight? or is there a single power supply both healights somewhere in the car, and it's just a simple fixture that take a Xenon bulb and you plug the supply via connector into it?

2) Any recommendation on headlights?

The reason why I ask is b/c I actually saw several different models, and I got confused...I saw an HID(don't even know what that is..?), a halogen, and a xenon...and they all range a price like $200-$750.

Any Advice also?

Thanx,

Peter

Thanx,

Pete

You Mean To Tell Me No One Knows Anything About These Lights?

What is the headlamp zenon, HID, etc on a 2007 335i?

-----------------
Update

OK, foudn some info.... these power suppies I was talkign about are called ballasts, they convert the voltage from 12V => 20,000V, and then once they are on, it drops the voltage to 85V.

IS THIS POWER SUPPLY (BALLAST) INSIDE THE HEADLIGHT FOR EACH ONE, OR IT IS A SEPARATE MODULE SOMEWHERE INSIDE THE HOOD?

Since I have my headlights off the car right now, it's easy for me to snap a pic. The ballast is located on the side of each headlight, each side has its own. It's the silver box.

On a related note, here's a pic of my headlight test with Umnitza LEDs. Deciding on ring size at the moment.

I believe the xenon headlights are close to $1k each. Its worth an insurance claim.

The headlight housing and the headlight it self are separate components. Its a bulb. The bulb hooks up to the ballast. The bulb plugs into the housing. So if you didn't break the bulb, all you need is the housing.
