What you think with blue/black smoke?

Ok a little back round. Two weeks ago HPFP replaced again. One week ago started to notice a ruff idle that was not to bad at all. Called for service. It was to go in next week. Now to today. Holy crap. Went to start it for the first time today. Car would run but shake like crazy. Really really ruff idle. SES light comes on and tapping the gas won't make it stop. It would hardly stay running. Thats when I noticed the blue/black smoke. Heavy and thick too. Well so much for next week. Car was towed today. Any ideas on what is going on? Thanks.

Not sure on BMW's, but blue/black smoke on Japanese car usually implied burning oil.

Since you just had the HPFP replaced, it is likely that you still have a fuel problem...especially with the shaking you describe.

An I.C engine is an I.C. engine, no difference between Japanese, American or German.

Typically:
Black Smoke = too much FUEL
Blue Smoke = burning OIL
White Smoke = burning Antifreeze
Grey Smoke = Fuel issues such as running lean or bad gas.

Very Bluish smoke can also be caused by transmission fluid if you have a defective transmission modulator and the vacuum line is sucking it into the engine. Not sure if these AT's have tranny modulators.

It could be a stuck injector or could be some sort of internal engine damage. Next troubleshooting step might be a compression check.

Mike. Hmmm what do you mean " some type of internal engine damage". That does not sound good. I like your injector problem more. The car does have 43000 miles on it now. After the HPFP I left the car stock because it was still not running right. I had a gut feeling it would be going back in a week or two. Plus someone talked about a tranny vacuum line or something. Funny thing is when driving in DS mode it was shifting very hard and seemed very much out of sync. Not sure it that is related to anything but that only happens in DS mode. I will update all if you guys would like me to when I hear back from them today.

highly unlikey as head gaskets usually leak coolant. Could possibly be valve seals?

If it suddenly started doing that, and the trans is acting funny, that seems likely.

But if you told me that your car was puffing a bit of blue smoke and you told me nothing else about it, the most obvious thing to check on these cars would be the turbos. At least IMHO.

It doesn't seem likely if you're just running a tune only at mild boost levels but stranger things have happened. So best to check compression first if that is suspect just to eliminate it. You can inspect plugs at the same time.

You're engine is fine. If it wasn't running right after the HPFP replacement, something HPFP related is still wrong and resulted in the misfire/engine lumpiness. It is the misfire that causes the smoke. Especially in the morning when the engine is cold. It's also mixed with the usual steam that comes out of the tailpipe (early morning condensation burning off) which makes the smoke look worse than it really is. I'm sure the dealership can figure out what they did wrong

Well guess what. I never heard back from the dealership yesterday. I am kinda not surprised. A call to say "hey sorry we have not looked at your car yet.". Would have been nice.

Well I picked up the car and here is what they did. 6 Spark Plug's and 6 Injector's Lets see if I can keep it out of the dealership for the next two weeks. this is what was written on my paperwork " Checked fault codes. Smelled strong fuel odor. Followed test plan. As per T/C case replaced all fuel injectors and spark plugs. Registered injectors. Cleared Adaptations.

They forgot about the coils
