N54 Waste Gate Rattle

I'm new to the world of Bimmer owners having purchased an '07 335xi and so far I'm love'n it. Before I bought I had BMW of Murray check it over with their "world class inspection" and they noticed a rattle from the waste gates and told me that replacing the vacuum controllers with programing (of course) would hopefully fix it, for about $400. Does this sound right to anybody as I've never really trusted dealers (service writers in particular) and this is the fist turbo I've owned. I'm more than happy to get the work done just wanted to hear some opinions if possible....

should be a free fix under warraty. outside warranty, most people pay around 200 for software update. 400 is on the high end and also not a guaranteed fix.

Yeah should have mentioned it's out of warrantee and they didn't say anything about flashing in an update, just that they have to program the ecu for the new vacuum controllers (unless that's considered an update)

1) Upgrade the software to version 2.35.2

2) Replace actuators (part refs 2 x 11.65.7.7585.745 and 1 x 11.65.7.585.747)

Sounds a lot like you were say'n thanks

The actuators fixed mine. The software update did not fix anything.

procede is just a cover up to the rattle. software did not fix mine had to get new actuators to truly fix it.

strange...I brought mine in and they replaced the turbos and flashed new software...still under warranty. This was when I was in D.C. Now that I am back in Germany, I have no more warranty...

Like everyone else said... If it's under warranty hit up the dealer. They will replace the wastegate actuators and update the software. If it's out of warranty, I would try the procede. You can change the wastegate from 90% to 30% (this is basically what the dealer update does) and you can gain a ton more power at the same time

No the actuators don't always fix it. Had my turbos replaced and new software installed it was gone for about 2 weeks and it came back. Procede, gone.

Doesn't setting the wastegate compensation to 30% on the procede drastically increase turbo lag?

If you are still under warranty it should be free. I had the rattle on mine as well so I took it to Daniels BMW. My SA Eric told me their standard practice for this problem is to replace the entire Turbo System being that it is all one unit. So 4 days later, new Turbos, Wastegates, Piping, etc. Warranty FTW!

I agree with this statement. If you solely looking to cure the wastegate rattle with a Procede module, why should you spend $650-$850 for a $400 fix (not focusing on the horsepower gain potential)?

As stated above and elsewhere, typical procedure for the SA is to perform a software update (which other than likely will not solve the problem). If the wastegate problem continues, then the turbos (which includes the actuator assembles) are replaced.

On '07 it's a common problem, but a solvable one. It sounds like you're out of warranty, so spending $400 sounds correct for parts, labor, and software update. Actually, I think it's cheap. Depending on American region, labor rates range from approximately $95-142/hr. I'm sure that replacing the turbos are more than a 4 hour job (not 100% sure). Turbo parts are not cheap either. So $400 looks pretty good if you're out of warranty. If you’re still in warranty, then it should be covered with no charge to you.

Gents,
I have the rattle and after reading couple of threads about it it seems like actuators needs to be replaces. Mine is out of warranty.
Is it possible to replace them myself without any software update?

i ve got wasteagate rattle since now more than 10 month, & not problem , i ve buy 2 both actuator, but it is necessary to put off both turbo and it expansive, and it is not sure after the noise wasn't here, so i decide to keep it with this noise....

i used my car every day, and not pb on perfomance etcc only this noise on deceleration!!!

my car is 01/07, and to replace it , it complex because it's necessary to adjust both new actuators on actual turbo, see my post here

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=403824&page=2

i put in procedure !!!

2°) adjust both wastegate and noise come back after ?

3°) replace both actuator and noise come back after ?

so ????

just search... I don't know how many times I have answered this question, let alone all the other users on this forum. I've answered it at least twice in this past week alone...
