Vishnu Exhaust-- suggestions?
Hi guys,
Now that we're up to speed on the engine control side of things and have actually tuned several dozen cars, it's time to make an exhaust system. Some of you have liked the sound of the exhaust on my personal car. It runs twin oval bodied SS magnaflows and is completely separated from the turbos (no X-pipe). Tips are just a tad bit bigger than stock. Second set of cats are bypassed, making it an off-road use only system. Although the car still sniffs clean at the tailpipe. This is what we are leaning towards with the production unit. Any suggestions/comments/concerns/etc,? Now is the time to give us some ideas before we get too far along the process Please note that we're some time away from actually having any exhaust ready to sell. If you are in the market right now, it would probably be a better idea to get a quality exhaust that is currently available (Harmanmotive, AA, Ultimate Racing, etc,.) We just want to get some feedback from you guys right now.... Cheers, shiv |

Make it LOUD and have a nice low end rumble.....
i heard that if you reduce the backpressure on turbo cars it kills their power range...is this true shiv? My friend was thinking about taking out the rear muffler and welding straight pipes on but someone told him that he would have trouble....is this true? |

Your exhaust should complement the PROcede. Function over form first. Stock looking tips and no drone. Though I don't think droning is as big an issue on turbo cars. Some weight savings and a nice exhaust note would be last.

SOUND is the most important thing for me with an exhaust. Even if it gained 50whp, if it sounded like crap, I wouldn't buy it. So far I haven't heard a single exhaust for the 335i that I have liked the sound of. Most of them either have a weird tone or they are way too quiet. If I wanted a quiet exhaust I would keep it stock, I like to hear my exhaust when I get on it. Make that sucker sing! I also like the idea of having an option for a quad exhaust, but the sound is the number one priority in my book.

i wish you would get a back to back soundfile of the stock vs your exhaust for those of us who havent been able to hear it
i disagree with some of the above on making it quad and louder, quad = new bumper, i know i dont want to be forced to deal with that, and i know im not the only one that doesnt want to sound like a civic buzzing down the road loud is ok, as long as its not loud by sacrificing pitch i wish this would die already

Any sound clips shiv? Also what do you mean exactly by "off-road use system only?"

Make it sound just like the old G35s, and maybe (maybe) a little louder

Perfect exhaust would scream when you get on it and be quieter (almost stock-like) in lower RPM ranges. Obviously no rasp. There are going to be plenty of loud exhausts on the market very shortly, because they are easy to make. Stand out and make something unique (yeah, no magnaflows)
Also, make sure that later addition of aftermarket downpipe won't create any unpleasant surprises in the exhaust tonality. If possible give a choice of double or quad exhaust tips. |

Looks and Sounds
so far, i really liked Active Autowerkes pipes, all polished chrome, very nice looking, sound wise, anything with a growl as appose to a high rasp. but i guess that the 335's performance will partly dictacte its noise? simple bolt-on with no modifications, bigger tips, perhaps 90-100mm. dont shoot for comparisons of cars like G35 or 350z's, try to shoot for Ferrari/Porsche like! usually Supersprint have nice sounding exhuast systems http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=48260 quality quality quality! |

Performance is more important to me, personally, than sound. But obviously,I wouldnt buy something that sounded ridiculously bad. I'm with those that'd prefer dual exhausts instead of quads. When I think quad, i think M3.. and I didn't want an M3. 90-100mm sounds like a nice figure.
If I can just go ahead and be greedy, definitely go with a turboback, and how about copying apex'i and giving us an electronic control valve so we can be quiet when we want and loud and powerful when we want.

Quads would be just like slapping an M logo on the 335i. The quad look is exactly that, a look. It doesn't offer any better performance or sound.
Form should always follow function. That being the case I would like a simple true dual, as light weight as possible, producing the most power. Sound, as usual, is important as well. |

It clear that we are mixed on the quads. If possible, make it an option. I dont mind getting a new back bumper as i plan on replacing in anyway as i alwayz liked the quad look.
But i have to agree with the others in terms of sound, No rasp, and not tooo loud. Travis

any exhaust that forces people to buy a new bumper is not likely to boost sales imo.
perhaps enthusiasts will be more likely to buy, but the average guy just looking for an exhaust upgrade wont be as likely to get one if they have to buy a different bumper or alter their existing one.
