Clearcoat overspray possibly over dust - help
Long story short, dealer scratched my left fender. They had some
guy (supposedly the best - my ass) fix it. When I saw the car it was a mess so I had them re-do it. Car next time around was ok and with a bit of polishing I think the fender will be fine (but this time from me not from them cause they'll mess it up) even though that's not how a painted fender should be. I washed the car today and on the hood I can feel roughness over a large area. I am guessing the moron didn't cover up the hood properly so when he was putting the clear coat on the fender, the stuff went all over and possibly it has trapped dust too. What are my options here for solving this myslef? I want to hear from the "usual suspects" aka detailing gurus ![]() tackle this short of going over to the dealer and shooting people ![]() Thanks ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It should come off with a buffer.

Buffer and a polish like Mezerna or Z-PC? How certain are you about
that? I'm not doubting you - just want to make sure that they haven't messed up the hood to the point where it needs repainting and that your suggestion will definitely fix the problem. Thanks. Last edited by shadowcoder; 02-26-2007 at 02:31 AM.. |

Overspray Removal
Automotive paints will not stick to areas that have not been prepped by scuffing or sanding. Body shops will use heavy compounds like 3m "finesse-it" to remove overspray. So you should have an easy time remvoing it with compund and a buffer.
Clay bars usually work as well. I am surprised it did not in your case. I have used it in my shops. Slightly diluted Simple Green will also do it. good luck! |

Clearcoat is just clear paint, so overspray is overspray. The only problem you might have is if they did indeed catch dirt in the paint.
As got f1? mentioned, clay bar almost always works on this type of overspray, so it's weird that it didn't in this case. Simple Green is a locally available all purpose cleaner. That or regular alcohol mixed with water (50/50) might work. I'd personally try polishing as ZuerstBMW mentioned. Almost any light to moderate polish like menzerna final polish II, 3m finesse it, etc should work via PC. It is possible he tried to "blow the repair in", in which case he may have blended over the hood. I doubt that though. If none of the above methods work let us know. |
