Cobb,

Cobb for 2007 models.........can we get an ETA

The days are getting longer and the sun is coming out sooner....Can I get a practical ETA? So I can make my buying decision. Last I read they said end of January

If you’re not Cobb......please don't post in this thread.

I'm not COBB... but I would just like to say that you need to spell check

And ... COBB is currently working on it diligently and will have 2007 support as soon as they're done. I don't think they know the exact date yet either

As an authorized Cobb Tuning dealer, I can definitely tell you guys that 2007 N54 support is definitely on the TOP of their priority list. You guys can check out what they're looking to do by the end of 2011 below:

When will there be support for XXX N54 equipped BMW's?
Here are the development priorities for Cobb right now.
1. Continue to find ROMs for 2008-2011 N54 turbo engined cars and create maps for the 1, 3 and 5 series. This includes the xi and is. We are waiting for a ROM to be provided for the N54 equipped Z4 to see what efforts are required. The X6 is currently lowest on the priority list for N54 vehicle support.
2. Finish developing the serial based communications protocol to enable AccessPORT compatibility with 2007 model year 1, 3 and 5 series.
3. Stage2 maps for supported vehicles.
4. Finish development of AccessTUNER Pro and get this into the hands of professional tuners (end of 1Q11).
5. AccessTUNER Race end-user tuning software will be released after AccessTUNER Pro has stabilized.

For the BMW Performance Power Kit you need to change from MSD80 to MSD81. If BMW can't retune an MSD80 then I suspect COBB is having a similar issue. It will be interesting to see how/if they will be able to get around this...

I doubt that BMW can't reflash the MSD80, especially considering that they have frequent updates for them. It likely has more to do with the software/hardware they have located at various dealerships (setup for CANbus not serial, or something to that effect).

If BMW "couldn't" reflash their own ECU/DME (MSD80), I would be scratching my head and wondering why they couldn't reflash their own product, when companies like Dinan & GIAC have been able to reflash the 2007 DME's for a long time now.

I agree with the OP, when Cobb first released the AP they mentioned that the 2007 AP would likely be released by the end of January. My thoughts are that they did not anticipate having to add so many ROM updates, firmware updates and make so many other minor tweaks for the 2008-2010's. My guess is that those tasks have taken up more of their engineer's time than they originally expected.

With that said, I would truly like to know & understand the process from a technical perspective, and see where they're at in that process. Cobb is generally pretty open about things... it would be awesome if they would post a breakdown to what all is involved in this process. While I'm no ECU hacker/engineer, at the same time I'm no stranger to tuning, and possess an IT/Networking degree & have worked in telecom/IT for over 8 years now, so I would hope that I would be able to wrap my brain around it.

I'm curious if the 2007 ECU/DME's are so drastically different that they require starting over from scratch per se, or if it's just a difference in communication protocol... the latter is my assumption based on the fact that the piggybacks are all interchangeable, which means the pinouts have to be the same, and the piggys are able to alter the same settings for both regardless of the protocol.

A basic breakdown of what needs to be done would alleviate a lot of curiosity.

Maybe Cobb will chime in?

Thats almost like assuming that every house looks the same on the inside because they all have a front and back door.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your inquiry. Our next big release for the BMW platform is the 2007 support for the AccessPORT. Hopefully it will be released in the very near future. If I had to put a date it would be 3-6 weeks unless we run into any issues.

Well, they ship the MSD81 to you with the last 7 digits of your vin printed on a label on the DME so I would think whatever needs to be in there that the dealer can't put would be in there already.
