European Delivery question; Insurance coverage in Italy?

I'm ordering a 1-Series M Coupe to replace my '07 335i coupe, and planning on taking European Delivery. My plan was to pick the car up in Munich, stay in northern Italy a week, and drive south and eventually end up on Rome where I'll leave the car for shipment back to the U.S. My dealer tells me that the BMW 2-week insurance included in the ED does not cover the car in Italy, and that coverage in Italy could literally run thousands of dollars for a week or two. Any idea if this is accurate or not, and if you've had to get tourist insurance in Italy do you have an idea of cost and who can binder it.

I've also heard that if you leave the car in Italy that someone drives it back to Munich for shipment.

Any help on these points would be appreciated, as I need to plan accordingly.

Your dealer is clueless about ED. You should considering buying the car from someone who knows what they are doing. The Bimmerfest forum has the best information on Euro Delivery.

The included insurance is good for Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Great Britain, Greece
Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway (Non EU but recognizes tourist license plates), Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (Non EU but recognizes tourist licence plates).

If you drop off in Rome it will cost 725 Euros to have your car driven back to Munich and then shipped to the USA.
