USPS or Pt. Roberts
Hi Guys,
I want to order a Cobb AP and i'm just wondering whats the best way to get it here. I can have it ship to Pt. Roberts and then go pick it up, but i'm worried that i will get taxed or import duties by Canadian Customs. Another way is to get it ship by USPS (additional $40) to my door, but i'm not sure if i will get charged with tax or duties? I know that usps don't charge brokerage fee like FedEx. Which is the best way and/or the cheaper way to go? or any suggestions or experience you guys got will be great! Thanks in advance |

are you talking about UPS? not usps. just be careful of the duties and taxes. i'd go to point roberts to get it.

no not UPS, i'm talking about USPS (United States Postal Service). i heard that UPS and FedEx charge brokerage fee. I got charge brokeage fee when i recieved my front lip (vendor shipped with FedEx). I also ask the vendors and they dont know much except that USPS doesn't charge that brokerage fee (American vendors so they don't know much after it reaches Canadian Customs). But not sure if USPS will charge duty and taxes when i receive it. |

either place you ship it just ask them to put a lower value so you wont get taxed as much if you do have to pay duties

I remember getting a parcel via USPS and not having any charges on duty/taxes. But usually I still prefer Pt. Roberts cause I know for sure how much the tax will be if I do get charged. Sometimes couriers will mail you a bill instead of having you pay at the door, which is really annoying.

good luck avoiding the taxes. Not declaring is 1) Fraudulent 2)not worth the risk as your ability to cross the border will be limited if you get caught
If you get it shipped to you via a US vendor, you will almost certainly be taxed in addition to the brokerage fees (which will be at least $40 with UPS). You could ask them to write a lower value as a member suggested, but then if the item is lost, you will be out the difference in claimed value and what you paid. Customs has the ability to check declared value vs actual value pretty easily. If you sense the bias in my post its because I am selling a cobb AP and could ship it to you if you want PM me if youre interested. Otherwise, good luck, Cobb makes a great product. I cross the border almost every 2 weeks to Point Roberts. If they ask, you tell them you got parts for your car. They'll ask your total value of goods and be honest on the items but underestimate a bit and you're good to go .... I only paid taxes on my rims but not on any other parts on my car...

Also, border officer is not that strict on us. About 80% time, if the declared cost is around $500, they will let you go w/o even single penny taxed if you have a clean record. Also, most of them have no idea what the auto parts actually cost. I bought Eisenmann exhaust and ship to Blaine and brought it myself. And had $1000 receipt and they just let me go without any tax. (actual price was like 2.5k)

yep. I never got taxed at point roberts. just be honest to them and explain to them the part with patience (cuz they won't understand) and they will let you go.

I only used one in Blaine and they cost $2.50 for anything like even car bumper. But the traffic is sometimes so crazy. Any recommendation on ones at Point robers?

The lineups at point Roberts are a lot shorter than Blaine. "The letter carrier" charges 3$. There is a shell also 2pm down the road. The shell also has a shipping store and they are open on Sundays when all the other similar places are closed. Sunday traffic is almost non existent during non beach season. Only downsize is that there is no hard liquor store in that area only a wine store at the IGA.
