N51

Yesterday, I read all the threads on the BMW 328i and found out that my engine is N51, and as I understand the possibility of easy tuning for both the N52 no. if any options, performance parts to increase power at this engine?

Sure is, the Euro tuners can get the same power as a tuned 330 out of that motor. That motor comes with the 3 stage intake manifold installed (at least on the Europe Version). It is downtuned with a reducted compression ratio for the pistons. I have seen numbers by tuners claiming as high as 280 PS, which is about 275 HP.

If you have the N51N you do NOT have the 3 stage intake manifold. If you have the N51, you DO have the intake manifold.

http://www.techtec.de/index.php?lang=en (reading about the E93 here in europe many guys swear by this company not sure if they do ECU tuning if you send it do them)

http://www.wintertuning.de/ (talked about extensively in the 1 seriers forum)

http://translate.google.com/translat...ort-42319.html (Some research I was doing, all the guys in that forum have your motor.)

Hmm... I thought the N51 was only equipped with the single stage manifold... and the N52/N52KP with the three stage on the H.O. version

As I recall, its the DI N53 that gets 272hp with some chip tuning, as the euro 125i is capable of a 55hp jump with just a remap.

Yep, I know! That's direct injection for you. It can go higher with some bolt-ons, like intake, exhaust. I'm guessing 285 natural horses!

Oh yeaaaa.

Dropping 350lbs off of that 3600lb hunk, then dropping in a S/C.

3250lbs @ 330hp

There is a 3 stage version, the E93 has it (at least here in Europe) BMW uses SO many different combinations with their cars here it is almost impossible to keep them straight.... Perhaps it isn't the 1 series that has it, I apologies for that, I was doing multiple things at work. Regardless of that, the guys I linked you will have tunes available for you. The only problem is you will have to send off your DME.

The N52N also has the 3-stage from what I have gathered... Fack there are to many revisions of this motor, emissions make things a bitch to keep straight.

Gotcha

Yep, the N52N has it but produces a mere 255 in comparison to the N53s 272. I don't know how much an N51 would produce, most probably something along those lines.

How in the world did you manage to get your hands on that?

How can you tell? I always thought the northern 128s came with the N52KP Sulev engine, which is possible to have the 3 stage. I really don't think the N51 has a 3 stage, and the spec sheet seems to agree with me.

My 128 has a single stage.

My dad has an N51 is his 328xi while I have an N52 in mine. I dont know how he managed to get that, I only found out recently because the BMW FS statement said SULEV in the title.

Yes, usually the next gen cars are low emission up north.

I still think theyre single stage though...

There is a revision with the 3-stage manifold. I cannot attest to its availability in the US. It is available in Europe from my research I have done. It looks like the E93 got it over here. As for the region in the US it is possible that those guys have gotten an N51 with 3-stage.

California screws things up for everyone...... (damn emissions laws, Euro cars come without secondary cats FYI)

All us spec N51s have a 3 stage intake manifold. That's how they get the same power of as an N52 powered 3/128 even with lower compression.
