Unhappy Another new problem symbol

Well another dash problem symbol showed up tonight....

A picture of a battery with a key across it... yes it means the battery in the remote key fob is weak. I am not sure how the car knows this... but it does anounce this...

I wouldn't mind this, but there should be no reason for this as the key is in the ignition for 100 miles each and every day. The key is not pressed against anything in my pocket etc.... so I assume yet another fault

I guess it's time to call the dealer again

Garage List
Do you have CA? The battery in a CA key is not rechargeable.

The key is 1 year old!

The symbol first showed yesterday at 5:00pm by 10:00pm the key would not open the car! 5 hours notice was not much....

BUT I thought a good opotunity to test what the dead key would do.

Well of course the slide out key still opened the door, the alarm went off, the I put the dead key in the igntion, and the alarm stopped, AND the car still started.

So clearly the imobiliser does not need the batery. In fact the only use of the battery is to open the central locking and to pass the service info to the BMW dealer.

The fact the car still started was good news as it could easily have been at work when it failed.

I will now see how I get on at the dealer....

Went in to the dealer... they confirmed it was the key. They had to oder a new key.... I was surprised they did't carry them.

New key is working fine, and the old key is still OK as a backup as it still starts the car!

Glad you got your problem solved.

Dealer won't usually carry extra keys. They hardly get replaced. And in the event that a key needs replacement, they probably have to go through many security measures to get the new key activated.

In my experience keys are often replaced, e.g.
Lost, Stolen, Duplicates, etc..

It took then 5 mins to re-activate they new key..
