Honestly get it done right you payed a lot for your car and might as well make it look fresh or call your insurance and claim a hit and run.

dude, do you really think its that easy? You are going to buy all the necessary stuff, spend your time doing it, then you are going to finish and stand back and say to yourself "damn, I should have just paid the shop again"
you are going to spend more to TRY it out yourself and still have to take it to the shop and pay the same... DONT DO IT |

A good spray gun will be a few hundred EASY. Do you know what size needles you need and will you have all of them? Primer surfacer, primer sealer, base-coat, clear-coat will all be needed along with various grit of sand paper. Now factor in you need an air supply. Many good spray guns, like HVLP's will need a compressor that can handle a high volume of air = AT LEAST a few hundred bucks used. You can use that same air supply for your DA sander which is needed to relevel the finish. That same DA sander will be used afterwards in the "cut and buff" process to rid the horrific orange peel. Now factor in you'll still need various grits of sand paper (400, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500) and a respirator. You'll also need various polishes, pads, and a buffer.
Once you spend the few grand to get the needed supplies, you're result will still SUCK as you have no experience doing this type of work. A good painter is hard to find and it takes years to master. Check with your insurance. Here in Michigan, you can go after the other person's insurance for up to $500 (which is the default amount for your deductible unless you change it). If you don't like in a state like Michigan (which is no fault) then you might not have to pay anything as the person who caused the accident is held liable. I hope you can look at this thread as a lot of car enthusiasts around the nation hoping you don't waste your time and money in ruining the look of your car. Good luck. |

(a recent hit and run that knocked my sideview mirror off and made a few scuffs ended up costing ~3k after all was said and done [electrical work], thankfully i only had to shell up 500). |

Both wet-sanding and auto painting take years of experience to get right, as others have said you cannot just 'pick it up' by just asking some basic questions.
